Yahoo Mail Timezone Offset Issue

Unread post by RedRamGT » 2023-09-30, 00:45

Operating system: Windows-7 Professional 64-Bit
Browser version: Pale Moon 32.4.0.1
32-bit or 64-bit browser?: 64-Bit
Problem URL: mail.yahoo.com
Browser theme (if not default):
Installed add-ons: None
Installed plugins: (about:plugins): None

I live in Eastern Michigan, in the United States. Right now, we are in the Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) timezone, which is an hour later than the "normal" Eastern Standard Time (EST) timezone.

Yahoo Mail shows the time stamps for the emails with the EST time, and not EDT times. For example, if I send an email with Yahoo Mail at 7:00 AM, it shows that I sent it at 6:00 AM. And, if someone replies to the email at 9:00 AM, it'll show that they sent it at 8:00 AM. It does work properly on Firefox, and I did testing with a fresh install of Pale Moon Portable, with no changes or additions.

I thought I would ask, in case there is something I can set in Pale Moon to get the proper timezone offset. I did see an entry for something called "Computed TimeZone", is that something that could be causing this?

Thank You, Paul Adrian.

That is interesting, I would have thought almost everything in the webmail comes from the server and is not calculated locally?

Daylight savings starts for me tomorrow (in the southern hemisphere) so I will be check what times are shown in my yahoo mail account.

I think you're right. I sent some emails yesterday and I know it was an hour later than what the timestamps said. So I went into Yahoo mail settings but I didn't see a thing about daylight savings. I really don't think there is anything that the browser can do about it, but, I'm not an expert, so let's see what the experts say.

EDIT
I just opened Yahoo mail in Chromium and it also shows the time as EST. Are you sure Firefox is adjusting the time to EDT?

ron_1: Yes, I am sure Firefox is doing it correctly. That is on the latest Firefox ESR... I do not have Chrome installed, so I can't try that.

I did some testing today, and Pale Moon through release 31.1.1 has the correct EDT timestamp on the Yahoo emails. Beginning with Pale Moon 31.2.0 the incorrect timestamp begins to happen. I hope that helps somehow... That is with Pale Moon Portable, with no configuration changes, additions or other modifications.

Neither do I. I have (as a secondary browser) Chromium. ;)

That is what I thought as well. But maybe we're wrong? Under the timestamp in Yahoo mail is a link "Raw message." When I click on that I get a new tab (that looks like a plain text file) and there the time is given in UTC (5 hours later than EST, 4 hours later than EDT).

Daylight savings began this morning. I sent an email and using Yahoo Webmail in Pale Moon, the times as I would expect. And going through the Yahoo settings I couldn't see any option for time zones either.

Back then with that change we did a lot of work on the ICU library, so that's probably why the behaviour changed.

I'm not the original poster, but since I am seeing the same "problem" (it's not a biggie to me) I'll answer as well. Yes, all time settings are set correctly on my system.

Moonchild, yes the system timezone is set up properly for daylight time, and the time switches back and forth automatically on the right dates.

I agree with ron_1, this isn't anything important or critical. I just wanted to report it, in case someone else notices the time and is "scratching their hair" wondering.
