Random crashes

Unread post by number101 » 2023-07-11, 05:59

Random crashes, up to a few times per day. Often when I'm using a different program (usually Brave) Reloads tabs on restart. Sometimes while I'm in PaleMoon (though not necessarily doing anything, it's happened when I was just looking at a page), more often while I'm in something else (qBittorrent, PIA (VPN), Brave (runs outside of VPN), maybe LibreOffice). Normally with BitDefender, Malwarebytes Free, IconRestorer, IDrive, Password Safe running on taskbar..
Usually the same 21 tabs open. NYTimes.com has issues logging in with Secret Agent active, and sometimes with a script hanging, but crashes don't seem to be related to that.

Operating system: Win 10 (with Classic Shell)
Browser version: 32.2.1 (but I think crashes occurred at least the prior version)
32-bit or 64-bit browser?: 64
Problem URL:
Browser theme (if not default): default
Installed add-ons: Active: Adblock Latitude; Disabled: Bookmark Favicon Changer, CanvasBlocker Legacy 0.2, Cookie Permissions Button 3.3.0, Decentraleyes 1.4.3, FEBE 10.0.4, NoSquint 2.2.2, Pure URL 3.3.4, Secret Agent 1.35, Thin Bookmarks 1.4, Toggle Javascript 1,2,2,010
Crashes occur even with all except Adblock disabled.
Installed plugins: (about:plugins): PDF Xchange Viewer 2.5.322.10, PDF Xchange Editor 10.0.1.371, VLC Web Plugin 3.0.3.0

16GB RAM, rarely more than 60% in use.

Try upgrading to 32.3.0, which was just released today. 32.3.0 has a fix that addresses intermittent crashes.

Probably unrelated, but I would suggest not running two or more anti-virus/malware/etc. programs at the same time. And generally speaking Windows Defender nowadays is good enough that you actually don't need any additional safe guards (granted that you use a safe browser and mail client if you use one).

Good point. I've turned Malwarebytes off (I think it took liberties when I ran it to scan for malware). I'll see if that helps.
Still getting random crashes with 32.3.1 64bit, even with all the extensions disabled. They sometimes happen all by themselves (even when I'm away from the computer, maybe some tabs auto-reload?), or (gut feeling) maybe 1/2 to 1 sec after I click to a different tab.
The redeeming feature is, PM remembers all the tabs and sets them up when I restart it (even if it doesn't actually load them until I go to them), though the 3-4 that have logins need to be logged in again.

A safe browser? I use PM!

No need to use both PDF Xchange Viewer and PDF Xchange Editor, providing two plugins to Pale Moon. The former has been replaced years ago by the latter. You can hide all references to the paid features if not using them (in Preferences/Registration).

Interesting, are these NPAPI plugins and do they explicitly support Pale Moon?

Off-topic:
Yes, they do. Works just fine. A few pdf links still bring up the download dialog, but perhaps that's related to how the PDF is stored/handled online.

And is it NPAPI (as in it would show up on the about:plugins page) as opposed to PDF.js and similar? I'm on Linux so can't test it for myself but am curious to see if there are still actual plugins being maintained.

Yes, NPAPI. The OP also clearly mentions it in his first post.

Dumped the viewer plugin, and disabled the other two. (Not sure why I had a VLCplayer plugin, unless PM wasn't working with some web videos, but that's the case with most dailykos.com twitter embeds). No change, it just blew up going "back" from https://arstechnica.com/health/2023/07/ ... nts-page=1. Tried a second time (after reload) and that worked though. Gut feeling is, most likely to happen when switching tabs or going "back" from a tab, but also when just minimized using another program. It's not crippling, PM recovers fairly well, but it is annoying.

Just installing the VLC player would drop a system-wide registered plugin without asking. That's typical VLC behaviour - it hooks into everything it can.

Ok, but now VLCPlayer disabled in PM. Don't want to uninstall it, because it's very good at what it does, though don't want it messing with PM.
Crashes seem less frequent now (after 2 PM updates). None today. But still occasional.

Maybe try SMPlayer.
I use and have no problems with Pale Moon.

Thanks for suggestion. Wouldn't load MSStore page (maybe it doesn't like my VPN location, or that I'm not using Edge). But suspect crash prob more related to javascript (I can usually switch to Brave for the playbacks) or maybe SecretAgent (why should any website care what browser I'm running, but NYTimes.com login definitely does, though regular user agent is usually acceptable). Could be some blocked 3rd party link on website too.

Addendum (I know a new release is in the works, so maybe this is irrelevant).
I was just in Brave with PM running in background. I got a brief popup that said "A breakpoint has been reached." And perhaps other things, but that window was gone before they registered. (It's possible I blew the msg away, or that it went when I changed focus.) PM had crashed.
Still my fav browser, and it recovers all the tabs when I restart it. And doesn't happen often, maybe every few days.

I've gotten that message also with firefox running. Didn't recover tabs though.
Mine is crashing repeatedly now and I can't trust it to stay up. I am using firefox until the new version is released.

Not sure why you would think going back to a version with more known crashes would be beneficial...

The behaviour described though looks like the garbage collector crash we've found and by the looks of it fixed, which will be part of 32.4.0. Aside from running a master (dev) build, you won't have many other options at the moment but to wait for the September release.
