Really big images invisible at certain zoom levels

Unread post by pepecachu » 2023-05-27, 22:49

Operating system: Fedora 38
Browser version: 32.2.0
32-bit or 64-bit browser?: 64
Problem URL: https://harimanga.com/manga/i-confessed ... chapter-1/ but also happens when loading a local image,
Installed add-ons: Also happens in safe mode, but here they are
1 Key Web Search, Active Tab More Visible, Aviary Add-ons Manager, BIZARRE, Cookie Masters, Decentraleyes, Expose Noisy Tabs, Extended Statusbar, FEBE, FireShot, Greasemonkey for Pale Moon, Link Alert, LiveClick Lunar, NoSquint, Palefill Web Technologies Polyfill, Pure URL, Session Manager, uBlock Origin, ηMatrix
Installed plugins: (about:plugins): Flash, but it's disabled.

If possible, please include the output of help->troubleshooting information (as text):

Hello.
The two principal images (the comic itself) in the Problem URL become invisible at certain zoom levels. The images are still there since right click on top of where they are suposed to be brings up the image context menu.
One of the images is 900x49781px. The problem occurs at zoom >=70%. I've converted it to png and gif, and the same thing happens, so it's not a problem with jpg.
The other image exhibits the same problem at zoom level >=60%. It's longer that the first one, at 720x56510px (but smaller overall, less mB, less pixels).

Same thing happens when you open only the image, from a URL or locally. When you open the image you can see it since it's really zoomed-out, you have to click it to make it real size to see this strange behaviour.

In Chromium and Firefox it works as expected (see video for behaviour in the three browsers). Well, for some reason Chromium scrolls down when you zoom in but the images remain visible.

I'm guessing it's something to do with an option in about:config, configured with sane-sized images in mind.

Can't reproduce here on Windows. Are you using a custom DPI setting?

Just tried it in my laptop (also running fedora 38), same thing...

Nope, default.

Why do they have such gigantic images?

It's a manga reading site, so it's quite normal. Though it definitely would be a better UX to split them per page...

They post the entire manga as a single scrolling image? Psychos. I mean it would take extra effort to stitch the pages together into a continuous image than having separate scanned images. But hey, perfect for projecting the whole thing in your private 1000 seat movie theatre!

I think in some cases putting all pages in a single image can be better. For one the browser doesn't have to do multiple HTTP requests to download all pages. If the scan is encoded as a baseline JPEG, then on pretty low-bandwidth connections the UX can be better there as you will see the manga truly being loaded from top to bottom, rather than many parts being loaded top to bottom with progress being very varied.

I know I said "definitely would be a better UX to split them per page" earlier, but that's if you're in desktop/laptop and have a very good internet connection. If you're on a mobile device, a single image option would more likely to be a better experience...

Then there's also the fact that webtoon creators draw their comics in a vertical scrolling format rather than the traditional horizontal page-by-page. If you're a regular webtoon reader, you'd probably also want to read your manga that way too.

We have hard limits on image sizes. There's no way around it because images have to be rendered as textures in accelerated layouts.
In addition, images that size will gobble up a ton of memory because their memory cannot be managed based on visibility in the viewport.

So no, we won't be changing that. They need to make their site a bit more sane.

And besides how hard is it to implement a regular image slideshow gallery when there are tons of websites that already do that. Swipe left/right on a touchscreen, or use arrow keys & arrow icons on a keyboard + mouse setup
The added benefit of being able to also jump directly to where you left off in the middle using a table of contents in a dropdown/combobox.

Same. I zoomed in and out until the cows came home and the images always showed for me.

It is hardware-dependent.

Diagnostics
AzureContentBackend: cairo
Most likely this is a limitation in the Cairo library.

The problem can be reproduced on Windows:
about:config
gfx.content.azure.backends = cairo

I have no way to check in Unix, but in Windows the picture is drawn without restrictions with the Skia.
In Unix, it makes sense to try:
gfx.content.azure.backends = skia

 It did indeed fix it!
Skia struggles a little with the zoom in the really big images
Had to cut the image for cairo. Full width, and ten times control++

I'll be keeping the default option though, there must be a good reason for it to be cairo. Many thanks!

Understandable. It's indeed very bad design and a very, very niche problem after all.
You think it would be a good idea (or even possible!) to put an error message in the console when this happens? I was pretty confused when I encountered the problem.

Yeah. One or two images per comics is too much, but dividing it in too many images also has it's problems. I don't know what they did with the spanish naver webtoons server, but every other episode I find myself waiting for a ramdom panel to load (once it took 10 seconds! and it was in the middle of the episode, so that's on top of another 2 minutes). It doesn't happen in the english site, weird thing.
Off-topic:
The authors of some webtoons I've read, in the afterword, mention that they first draw the comic by pages, and then reposition the panels to make it a long strip. Never undertood why, but hey, bet it helps if it ever gets printed
