address bar just kind of..doesn't work??

Unread post by xmenfan2001 » 2023-03-04, 03:29

i'm having a weird issue where when i try to search anything or navigate with the address bar, it just.. won't go? whether i hit the enter key, or if i hit the little "go" arrow, nothing happens. using the home page lets me navigate just fine with the sites on there, but i have other places i want to access that aren't on there.
also not as big an issue, but right-clicking links and pressing "open link in new tab" just doesn't work either ?? its not a big deal since i can click and drag the link but it's a little annoying :p

Sounds as if you may have a corrupted Pale Moon installation or a failed update install on your machine?
It can happen... computers are not perfect... power interruptions, OS problems, dodgy RAM/HDD/SSD, incomplete browser shutdowns, excessive tinkering in about:config, finger trouble, cat walked across keyboard, gremlins, bad luck, whatever?
Personally, I wouldn't mess around trying to work out exactly why... not having a working Navigation bar is pretty terminal. :problem:

IMO probably best to start over with a completely fresh install of latest Pale Moon 32.0.1.
Your Troubleshooting Info above shows no extensions installed. Save any bookmarks to desktop (Open library... Show All Bookmarks > Import and Export > Export Bookmarks to HTML...). Then do a full uninstall of all Pale Moon files on your machine.

A fresh install really doesn't take long to do and can save an awful lot of time-wasting and messing around. :)

(BTW - The free version of Revo Uninstaller works well and IMO is a useful aid to achieving a full and complete uninstall.)

@xmenfan2001: Glad that worked for you. :) If it hadn't, it would probably have meant deeper OS/hardware issues needed fixing!

I couldn't find this link earlier... but did recall that Moonchild had written a 'howto' guide a long time ago Re: doing a full Pale Moon uninstall... which included a list of additional files that needed to be removed to achieve a 'blank slate' reinstall. Some files, folders, and paths may have changed in both Pale Moon and post-Win7 OS' since the article was last edited in 2018, but the list gives a good idea of what needs to be done... see: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=662&p=3094
Moonchild wrote:Sometimes, things can go horribly wrong, e.g. because of a power outage, hard disk problem, bad memory stick or malware messing up Pale Moon and/or its user profile.

Here is a run-down of how to completely remove Pale Moon, rescue your bookmarks, and do a clean re-install if uninstalling/reinstalling the normal way fails.
The 'Pale Moon profile backup tool' is also worth using occasionally too... just in case: https://www.palemoon.org/backuptool.shtml

BTW - Revo Uninstaller Free has been around for a long time; I've been using it for over a decade. IMO one of those useful 'tool' programmes that hasn't become bloated or added unnecessary frills over the years... just updated to include newer Windows OS versions. Yes, you do need to take care and pay attention to the 'tree' of leftover folders and files Revo usually finds after the built-in 'stock' uninstaller has finished... but Revo doesn't delete anything without your permission. A great tool for removing the bloatware and c***ware that comes pre-installed on almost all new machines.
