Seems to work for me fine here. I'm using this patched version of the 34.0.0.137 NPAPI from https://github.com/darktohka/clean-flas ... s/tag/v1.7

I tried using the one you provided https://github.com/darktohka/clean-flas ... s/tag/v1.7 , uninstalling first the one I was using (an aur package called flashplugin).
Didn't work.
I renamed my profile and created an empty one.
Didn't work either.
And I can launch the flash file using the stand alone player, but Pale moon seems to be unable to load them anymore.

The link you provided works on my system with Flash 32.0.0.371

Comodo Internet Security
Pale Moon 33.0.2, Epyrus Mail 2.1.2, Firefox 115.8.0esr, Thunderbird 115.8.1, and SeaMonkey 2.53.18

I'm thinking there may be an issue with inter-process communication (potentially blocked by your OS) since it complains about being unable to create a channel for communication.
You can try to work around it by pulling the flash player plugin into the main process by setting dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to false and restarting. This isn't recommended because of the inherent risks of Flash being a foreign code executor itself and i don't believe Linux flash has its own sandboxing, so at your own risk.

###!!! [Parent][MessageChannel] Error: (msgtype=0x9A0071,name=PPluginInstance::Msg_PBrowserStreamConstructor) Channel error: cannot send/recv

I'll leave my workaround for future? reference: use adobe flash player standalone, it works with local files and url that point to a swf file.

Well clearly there's something else going on then. I can't really help since I'm not sure what exactly is going wrong here or why.

dom.ipc.plugins.enabled actually doesn't do anything it seems since version 28, which might've been inherited during the fork of mozilla52. Seems like the RunPluginOOP boolean in nsNPAPIPlugin.cpp will always return true, which means there's no way to disable the plugin container process. https://xref.palemoon.org/palemoon-rel2 ... in.cpp#227

I forgot to add a relevant information (a user might come and post that this is required for flash to work). I had/have the

Code: Select all

/etc/adobe/mms.cfg
file with the following contents:

Code: Select all

SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0
AutoUpdateDisable=1
EOLUninstallDisable=1
AllowListUrlPattern=*://megami.starcreator.com/

Hmm. Not sure why that was yanked out. the logic was rather complex for it, sure, and could be simplified, but mozilla just removed that part and short-circuited it; the rest is still in place by the looks of it. so it can be restored. I've not had any luck finding the relevant bugzilla bug though.

Ah whoops, I know about what bug initially removed those checks, it's in bug #1194780. Relevant diff at https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/ ... 576f2a846a (the bug number in the patch's message is wrong)

Though later in the line it seems they've restored the boolean for Android for some reason. See this esr45 xref from searchfox: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-esr45/sou ... in.cpp#253

Hmm, I think I might've found what is causing this issue, because my flash has stopped working as well. jouven, what version of glibc are you using? I'm suspecting I'm getting this issue right now because of my glibc upgrade from 2.33 to 2.34.

So here's an output from dmesg when I try to run a swf:

Code: Select all

[138297.851948] traps: plugin-containe[12261] general protection fault ip:7ffff2a8adb0 sp:7fffffffbbf8 error:0 in libc.so.6[7ffff2a28000+16e000]
It's definitely not a problem with IPC. This further proved by the fact that I can use the VLC Web Plugin just fine. So this narrows down the problem between flash and glibc. Since flash is pretty much completely discontinued on Linux (even on China where my flash comes from, don't worry the spyware is patched out), this is ultimately glibc's fault.

Now I'm not sure how to proceed here. Is there any way I can debug the process-container with gdb so I can get a trace on what exactly is crashing flash? I can gdb the palemoon binary, but how do I get it to monitor process-container from the gdb shell?

Sounds like whomever is making all these changes in glibc lately (see other threads on the forum) has no regard whatsoever for interoperability. And that's just terrible for a core system library. Do they really want to hack Linux into obscurity?

As for gdb/Linux debugging I unfortunately can't help.

I believe this only can affect glibc 2.36 and newer and only if your distro doesn't change the default. see Glibc 2.36 breaking change that hit some games and may have hit some software https://blog.hiler.eu/win32-the-only-stable-abi/
Unless glibc broke something else on even earlier versions, if it is the culprit.
Not on linux, so cant help/test, sorry.

Try running top and see if there is a separate process ID you can grab onto?

It was difficult, but I got an output from the plugin-container itself. Not sure how helpful it is though; I looked at glibc's source code and I can't seem to find any clue as to why these errors are happening.

Code: Select all

Thread 1 "plugin-containe" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
___pthread_mutex_lock (mutex=0x10102464c457f) at ./nptl/pthread_mutex_lock.c:76
76 ./nptl/pthread_mutex_lock.c: No such file or directory.

__futex_abstimed_wait_common64 (private=0, cancel=true, abstime=0x0, op=393, expected=0, futex_word=0x7fffeeb041b4) at ./nptl/futex-internal.c:57
57 ./nptl/futex-internal.c: No such file or directory.
Getting this output was difficult because the plugin-container process almost crashes immediately after I activate Flash, which gives me only a small time window to get gdb attached to plugin-container. So to get gdb to attach to the plugin-container, I had to do the following:
  1. Start Pale Moon with gdb
  2. Open a swf file
  3. Force refresh (i.e. Ctrl-Shift-R) the swf many times then send a SIGINT (i.e. ^C) to the gdb as quickly as possible. If you're lucky, you will see both the browser and a plugin-container process currently at a SIGSTOP state.
  4. Attach gdb to plugin-container's pid
  5. Enter "continue" to both Pale Moon and plugin-container's gdb shells so they can continue running
  6. Profit..?
Btw I'm now not sure whether this entirely glibc's fault, as the same exact Flash plugin works just fine in Waterfox Classic for some reason. Has something fundamentally changed between the NPAPI architecture between 52 and 56? But even then, it doesn't explain why Java, DjView, and VLC work just fine in Pale Moon...

I think I may know what's going on... tell me, was the copy of Pale Moon you used built against the glibc the system is using now? Is it the binary we provide for Linux or a self-built version? It may be important if this is a glibc-related issue we aren't accounting for in our build process, because I believe Pale Moon's official binaries are built against glibc 2.17 (RHEL/CentOS 7 libc) normally to avoid random compatibility issues with older OSes that arise if we use anything newer.

If my suspicion is right, there may be a difference between a self-built Pale Moon that uses the system's native glibc and the binaries we provide built against an older one.

I'm currently using the officially provided binary from lpmo. Now that you said it, I will try using stevepusser's build and see if that works.

EDIT: Nope, Flash doesn't work in stevepusser's build either. :(
