AddOns Manager is not initialized. Puppy Linux Bionic 32-bit PM 31.2.1

Unread post by sindi » 2022-08-06, 16:10

The latest August 4 palemoon.sfs will not load in my 32-bit Puppy Linux based on Bionic puppy (Ubuntu).

Addons.manager Error in background update: [Exception..."AddonManager is not initialized"

I used the Puppy Linux (upupbb32) updater to fetch the sfs, which will not load even after I disable all four add-ons and reboot, or using the load on the fly sfs loader. 31.1.0 is loaded instead. This is Pusser's 32-bit version. I did not try 31.2.0, or any other OS.

Why do you use such an old OS?
Why 32 bit?

 Why ask why? Being that you're so young, it may escape you as to why someone would want to use Puppy Linux, or (good gosh) a 32-bit microprocessor, but it does happen. The OP is NOT some newbie and simply doesn't need the "3rd degree" treatment.
To the OP: I'm a Linux user but I don't use Puppy so I don't know how to help you with this problem, but my advice would be to try the Puppy Linux "Browser" forum or perhaps try to contact Pusser himself. You might be able to find a workable answer that way.

So asking why now counts as '3rd degree treatment'? :silent:

Why jump in and make drama where there is none? Why are you jumping in to defence OP from some threat only you perceive? are they your S.O. or something and you're overprotective? :)

Thanks to other forum members for their input. I am happy to explain why I use older hardware. I have a 2006 DELL B130 that is 32-bit, with a lovely matte semi-wide screen, nice keyboard, and good sound, and it runs Puppy Linux upupbb 32-bit perfectly except that the left Alt key failed so I plug in a USB keyboard. I have trouble seeing glossy screens and I find wide screens annoying.

I watch Youtube on here with youtube-viewer, at 360p.

Puppy Bionic32 is based on Ubuntu 18, which is LTS and supported until next year. It runs a lot faster than the 64-bit version on here.

I got PM 31.2.0.1-1 32 bit gtk2 working by directly downloading the .deb file from Pusser's site. Something may be wrong with the palemoon.sfs file that was downloaded using Puppy linux menu. I will delete that file. The .deb file is slightly smaller.

Those B130's look a bit like an old Thinkpad - very solid and good looking. Have you ever tried antiX 32-bit on it? I'm wondering if it has enough ram to run it. Glad you are back up and running with Pale Moon and Bionic Pup.

PM32 runs on this 2006 DELL B130 and PM64 does not. On a 'new' laptop (2009) with 2GB RAM, they both run but 32 bit is much faster.

You do realise that that computer is 3 years older than the Pale Moon project, right? Also, if it comes with the standard memory configuration it simply won't have enough memory to run the browser properly (or at all, as you've seen with the 64-bit version). You really should consider retiring those laptops and get something a lot more modern.
Honestly there's no way we can support that class of hardware - if it works for you, great! If not, then there's little we can do and you should consider upgrading your hardware.

I'm glad you were able to get it working. It appears some Linux distros are pretty forgiving of older hardware, especially 32-bit distros. If it works for you, that's great, though.

The thing you should probably be aware of, is that the 32-bit builds are mostly not intended to run on actual 32-bit machines. I don't think we even test that configuration? I believe they are mostly intended to run on 64-bit machines with a 32-bit OS installed, perhaps due to having 3GB or less of RAM. If you have a 64-bit CPU, but less than 3GB of RAM, there is no real advantage to running a 64-bit OS at all. The other main situation that might call for a 32-bit version of Pale Moon is if you have NPAPI plugins that are 32-bit only and wouldn't work with a 64-bit version of the browser.

Native 32-bit machines usually had 2GB or less of RAM, so most of those machines would be hurting for RAM pretty badly on the modern Internet. It might be okay for IRC chat and reading e-mail, maybe visiting a few forums and websites designed for older machines, but that would be about all I can imagine it would do.
