Pale Moon forum

Whenever I try to close Pale Moon (v20.2.1) down, the memory usage and CPU usage figures in Task Manager are all over the place, and then suddenly, the CPU usages jumps up to around 99%, and sits there.

From that point on, the memory usage doesn't change, and it will stay like that (i.e. at 99% CPU usage) until I have no choice but to terminate the process.

It seems it gets to the point of saving the open tab info, because when I restart Pale Moon, all my tabs are successfully restored.

As far as I can tell, these problems started happening with the v20.2.1 upgrade.

Any ideas?

I'm running Pale Moon on a Windows XP Media Center edition Dell laptop, and I definitely did not have these issues until the latest release. I haven't installed any other software recently, and I'm not even sure there have been any Windows updates either.

That sort of oddity can happen with some heuristic -based security software, particularly with a very recently released update or a rare software. What security software do you use?

If it were the first install of Pale Moon, I might also check for Permissions issues; as this appears to be an older notebook, could it be that there's an error/fault on the drive in an area that Pale Moon uses? Run the full disk checks from the hard drive's properties tab in Explorer, you'll need to allow it to reboot to run a full disk check, that will take some time.

I'm using avast! Antivirus on this computer.

I can try running a disk check the next time I need to do a reboot.

From one Avast! user to another - get familiar with all the options in it; initially for Pale Moon, you'll need to ensure that auto -sandboxing is set to Ask, not Auto. You may also need to specifically Allow the Pale Moon executable and any plugin containers that it spawns.

Like many AVs, it's a 'Nanny' when it comes to non-mainstream software - and it assumes that the User is not to be trusted making decisions - so it doesn't ask.
