Tested in a fresh new profile in the mainline binary.

Some WebM videos in that website don't render properly. "The World in HDR", which is a 4K video, just flat out refuses to play at all. Others play, but renders blank. I tested in Firefox ESR 91 and they load fine there. I'm suspecting that it's due to our nestegg library being outdated; specifically we're missing out in bug #1539686. But not bug #1592193, apparently we already got that fixed by UXP commit 6b6aa59ffc97ac76b4429db38eedac8474f5fda7, but this was not documented in README_MCP. Is AAC even allowed in WebM? IIRC that's not allowed, and indeed in https://www.webmproject.org/docs/container/ it only specifies Vorbis and Opus as audio codecs.

Strictly speaking it isn't since AAC is an mp4 codec (see also the tag mp4a for it), but encoders DGAF which puts the burden on the client.

If anyone wants to start tackling HDR video content in a web browser, this might be a good place to start (so make a repo issue if you want this to be addressed). As a personal gripe I have always disliked how HDR settings in games make for unrealistic forced contrast - I'm not sure about the average person's eyesight but my eyes at least don't like it and it feels completely wrong and removing all details like would happen on a really badly set up monitor...

Yeah, I have no interest in adding HDR to the platform either. I don't think HDR is even supported in xorg or wayland over Linux AFAIK...

Regardless, we can of course update libnestegg. We might not do anything with the extra colour information but at least it will allow parsing of it

I've just upgraded nestegg in a separate branch, and it builds and runs fine. WebMs that previously worked in mainline still work. But the HDR test still fails to load for some reason, as well as the other test videos like this one (which plays but renders blank). I'm not sure why; I'm very sure I covered bug #1539686 as well as the regression at bug #1556586, since I used the latest master tree. Seems like I have to do some deeper digging.

We use a pretty different mime type here. In Mozilla, VP9 would be video/vp9, not video/webm; codecs=vp9.

No, "video/webm; codecs=vp9" is correct. "video/vp9" is actually wrong as it confuses the video type/container with the used codec in it.

It's only part of the HDR puzzle. Being able to parse the video is a good start if you want to implement this because without it, the videos will simply always fail.

Just because nestegg can parse it, doesn't mean the video back-end knows what to do with the high-bitspace video data, hence it rendering blank. You'll need some more plumbing to convert the video to SDR or sending it to the decoders in a way that requests SDR output.

Oh, ok. And it makes sense now why the HDR test video doesn't work, since we don't have BT2020 colorspace support included, which Mozilla implemented in bug #1493898. Unfortunately it seems to be implemented in WebRender, so this might have to be implemented from scratch. And I don't have the C++ skills for that...

Anyway, can you please reopen Issue #1943 (UXP)? I have two more libraries to update: nestegg and soundtouch.

EDIT: Hmm, perhaps it's implemented in WebRender, but there has to be way to implement this in say OpenGL, I think. I will do some research on this one...
