Update failed; can't seem to recover now

Unread post by iborg » 2021-12-22, 15:59

The other day I tried to update PM to the latest version by responding to the "Update Available" popup that came up while browsing. I had just installed PM a few weeks ago; it was a clean install done after removing the prior PM install (removed .palemoon & moonchild productions directories)
So this update failed for some reason, and now every time I start (or restart) the browser, I get a message saying that the update can't be installed, and to make sure that there is only one instance of PM running (and there is only one instance running):
The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Pale Moon running on your computer, and then restart Pale Moon to try again.
The system shows a pale moon zombie process as well as the normal pale moon process while it's running as well, strange...

Code: Select all

icb@Fussbudget:~/.palemoon> ps -ef|grep pale
icb 16258 2748 8 10:30 ? 00:01:40 /home/icb/.palemoon/palemoon
icb 16259 16258 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 [palemoon] <defunct>

What would be the best way to deal with this? BTW, the system is OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 running KDE. Thanks,

Re: Update failed; can't seem to recover now

Hi iborg,

I'm not a Linux user at present... maybe again in the near future. :) Anyway, here are a few suggestions:

i) Possible your recent 'clean' reinstall might not have been as clean as you'd hoped? Logic suggests the quickest fix may be another fresh install rather than struggling with recalcitrant updater? Check Moonchild's Windows-based reinstall instructions with a view to your Linux installation: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=662&p=3094. (Could your "pale moon zombie process" just be the failed updater?)

ii) Another possibility is that the 'parent.lock' file ("lock" and ".parentlock" in Linux) in your profile was not deleted when you exited Pale Moon last time... some sort of abnormal shutdown... see: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_us ... _lock_file and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fi ... responding.

iii) Check your 'directory ownership and permissions' as Moonchild suggests in forum thread Palemoon thinks it's already running when it isn't.: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25071&p=197728#p197729. Also note in Pale Moon's Linux FAQs 'for the updater to work properly Pale Moon must be extracted to a user-writable location' see: https://linux.palemoon.org/help/faq/#updater.

iv) Search forum for other Linux OS update-related threads e.g: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24828, viewtopic.php?f=3&t=27309&p=219578, and viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25457&p=201983.

Thanks for the reply. A few of these were already looked at, but I'll go over them again and if I can't find anything obvious I'll just reinstall again. Thanks for the link to the other thread btw.

Perhaps something here, Profile in use.

Not being sure of the ps output, but is <defunct> the parent to palemoon (as in the one spawned the other)?
