Youtube ads

Unread post by faithbuilders » 2021-05-16, 16:39

Anyone else having issues with this? I was happy with no youtube ads, but now they are not being blocked. I have the adaware addon, but the part that says, "block ads on this channel" is unclickable, and says N/A, it is not blocking ads on youtube... Grrrrrr

Is there a different addon for blocking youtube ads?

Thank you.

Google is doubling down on ads and it apparently happens even with other browsers and other adblockers.

Looks like I'm the only one with zero problems of ads in Youtube. All their ads come from Doubleclick, and blacklisting that domain works great for me.

Lucky you.
All the ads we're dealing with are in-stream stuff served from youtube itself which is very hard to selectively block.

Can you share a video example that has these ads? Maybe they're selectively applying them?

Out of curiosity some examples would be fine because I don't get those interstitials.
However I rarely watch YT and the few streams I've tested now were o.k.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uTjLd6USJo throws ads at the start as an example.

Yes, it throws an ad at the start but only with cookies enabled.
With cookies disabled no ad at the start. Tested with Pale Moon 29.2.0 fresh portable install (private mode browsing) without any extension.

With eMatrix on my machine, enabling everything shows the ad but blocking just doubleclick shows nothing, even with cookies enabled.
It is quite a mystery.

I too block "Doubleclick" on YouTube and with uBlock Origin enabled for YouTube using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 29.2.0, there was no ad seen on Moonchild's link to the video he posted.

How are you blocking "doubleclick" in uBO? I think I have it blocked, but I still get the opening ad in Moonchild's link.

Pale Moon 29.2.0 on Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon with uBlockO and Adblock Latitude. Accepting first party cookies but not third party cookies. Ran site for five minutes, did not see any ads at Moonchild’s site. I don’t think uBlockO blocks Doubleclick by default, but a rule can be added for it under “My filters”. ABL with it’s basic rule sets does block Doubleclick.

if you are using the advanced settings of ubo then doubleclick will appear in the grid and you can block globally from there.

I also block Doubleclick using a small program in linux Mint commonly named, "Domain Blocker". But in order to install DM from the Mint repository, I have to access the Synaptic Package Manger and search for the Domain Blocker's geek name which is, "mintnanny". Once Domain Blocker is installed, I add every Doubleclick web address I can find to it.

This "might" be one of the reasons I'm not seeing ads in YouTube because I spend a lot of time on YT using linux Pale Moon.

Well, I have all doubleclick blocked and I still get the opening ads.
It's fairly obvious that YT made some changes this month. But I don't think they just involve doubleclick.

Personally, I hadn't seen an ad from YT for months (I run ABL) ... but now they're showing up at the start of some videos (1/3?).

They appear to be dealt from some different third parties. While an ad was playing, I clipped the corner of a video that seems to indicate the particular origin is etoro.com

Anyone seeing similar things? Any ideas for blocking?

My point was that in the above example the ad can be circumvented without any ad-blocker, by simply disabling cookies.
Of course, with an active ad-blocker (uBO in my case) the ad gets blocked even with cookies enabled.

I don't have any personal filter for YT. The respective filters are contained in the filter lists.
One can see them by opening the logger while accessing YT.

- I was referring to Moonchild's example. I can't tell for every YT-stream.
- Blocking cookies and blocking "all YouTube cookies" is not the same thing.
