This one called Youtube polymer fixes can be used in conjunction with Greasemonkey - at least until they again change something. It adds a toolbox icon to the page where you can tweak the size of video thumbnails, hide different parts of the page and so on, to at least try to make it more desktop user friendly.

Note that I am using the default user agent override for Youtube and haven't changed anything else.
