Screenshot anomalies

Unread post by mazeckenrode » 2021-04-09, 14:32

Not seeing any references to this particular problem in the forums during a quick search, so here goes…

Using Pale Moon v29.1.0 & v29.1.1 x64 in safe mode, and performing all steps on both Windows 10 Pro and Windows 7 Pro machines, I’ve been trying to take a complete full-page screenshot (via Shift+F2 / screenshot --fullpage) of the following long web page:

https://resource.dopus.com/t/the-case-o ... d-10/38208

After page completely loads and without having scrolled at all, taking the screenshot gets me an image of the entire page, as expected.

If I scroll down the page and scroll back up (using PgDn followed by PgUp, only once in each direction), taking the screenshot immediately afterwards gets me an image in which the 9th and 10th posts on the page have been replaced with a large blank white space.

If I scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page, then back up to the top again, taking the screenshot immediately afterwards gets me an image in which the contents of the last four posts on the page are replaced with white space.

If I scroll down to about the middle of the page, the screenshot appears to come out fine.

If I scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and stay there, taking the screenshot immediately afterwards gets me an image in which the content of the first post on the page is replaced with white space.

The pixel dimensions of all attempted screenshots are the same, 800 x 8112.

This is by design. The browser will not keep everything in a rendered view. Very long pages might therefore be "blanked" partially if using the devtools screenshot (which does not make any effort to scroll the page to make sure all parts are rendered).
(The page scripting itself may also blank parts out -- I have not investigated too deeply)

If you use a tool like Fireshot that scrolls long pages to make sure everything is in view, you will not run into this.

Noted — though I might add that, except for cases where there is script-induced blanking of content, my very frequent use of the screenshot capability via devtools has been based on the assumption that it does what it claims to do, and I therefore shouldn’t need any tool like Fireshot. Now I find out I’ll need to pay closer attention.

The devtools are like any other part of the browser: best effort. More so: devtools aren't really maintained by anyone except on an ad hoc hotfix basis.
So while its screenshot function works in most cases, it's not necessarily going to be as good as a dedicated screenshot extension.
