Exit option close all Browser instances

Unread post by Jalkhov » 2021-03-27, 23:18

Good, I want to report something and I would like to know if it is a normal behavior. When I have a private window and another normal window, and I press Exit

from the private window for example, both windows are closed. This has taken me by surprise and closed things I didn't want, so my question is whether this behavior is normal.

Yes, that behavior is normal.

The "Exit" command exits (quits) the browser entirely.

To just close the active window, keyboard command: Ctrl + W
(or of course, click the "x" in the window's upper right corner.)

I see, thank you very much, it would be nice to add a warning that says "This action will close all instances of the browser", I don't know I'm just saying :roll: On more than one occasion I was a little annoyed that everything was closed :lol:

The exit option in any application is meant to actually exit the application and not close the active window, and you're surprised that it does what everything else does, let alone asking for an irritating popup for what's obvious to everyone but you? :crazy:

Hypothetical "hand-holding" scenario that will absolutely annoy the hell out of anyone:

User explicitly opens the menu, moves to "Exit" and clicks on it

"Are you sure you want to exit?
[Yes][No]"

*sigh* really?
-> Yes

"Closing the browser will close any windows you have open.
Are you sure this is what you want?
[Yes][No]"

*grumble*
-> Yes

and then the worst kind of dialog pop-up

"We've seen you have private browsing windows open. Closing these windows
will irrevocably delete any history and content in them.
[Continue] [Cancel]"

err... continue using the browser? continue shutting down? :D

One big rule of good UI design is that you don't bug the user with unnecessary questions, least of all a confirmation when they have explicitly invoked a function of the software.

New Tobin Paradigm

Reminds me of when users complained when they weren't prompted when exiting when they set it to always restore previous setting. Or when only one window with one tab is open.

Just redundant. Also, lets say it might be desirable, then you put us into a position of changing 15 year old behaviour the vast majority is used to for one or two users that seeningly need to be reminded to breath.

Core changes especially in established behavior require much more consideration than one may think. This is why we have extensibility that is so powerful. So everyone can potentually have their cellular peptide cake with mint frosting and eat it too.

Ok ok I get it :shock: You are absolutely right, each one of you, I accept that the warning is not necessary, but I must also say that it was not so obvious to me what would happen when selecting that option, let's say that it is one of those things that you discover by yourself, there is no manual that tells you what each thing does (I don't expect there to be one either). To be honest I had never in my life made use of this option (in any browser) :roll: So well, sorry for the unnecessary post.
