Removing/hiding tabs and menu bar button

Post by AXpact » 2021-03-08, 15:34

Hello,

Is there a way to remove/hide tabs and menu button as well, just like I can do with status, navigation and bookmarks toolbar, so that just a frame remains, and then by a keyboard shortcut, that bar reappears?

What I noticed, if the navigation, status and bookmarks toolbar are not ticked, then maximized Pale Moon window uses only one bar in which it fits tabs, menu bar button, and those usual three buttons in the right corner of the window. However, when you resize the Pale Moon window to any size which is not maximized, the new formed window immediately pushes down the mentioned bar with tabs and menu button, and adds above it another bar which only displays the name of the tab you're currently working on, and it holds those usual three window buttons.

Is it possible to have a smaller Pale Moon window just like the maximized version of it, where there would be only one bar in which the tabs would fit, menu button and other mentioned buttons as well? I don't get why is it better for a smaller size window to contain another bar which displays only the name of the tab you're currently working on, instead of having one bar only which would also preserve space, especially for window of smaller size, just as in a maximized version?

For example, I need to use a web app in a separated window of a smaller size, so I can keep it above the other window, and I need that window to be of smallest possible size to see the most of the content from window below, so that second bar is only taking space that could be otherwise useful.

If this suggestion is of any good, Pale Moon developers might want to add it to a feature requests as well, as described above, so the window could be used as only a frame. That would be indeed great and useful. However, until then, please let me know if there's any other solution to this with some kind of extension (I tried many but didn't find appropriate one), or is it possible to do this through some Pale Moon browser function which I'm maybe not aware of, or is there some other workaround that might help as well?

Thank you, any help would be very much appreciated.

Kind reagrds,
AXpact

It's called "being able to move the window by clicking on the title bar". You say it's useless only because you did not experience how dreadful it is to miss a titlebar.
There are some places where you can do what you are asking for, like Windows 10's file explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox or anything GNOME. Try it if you also use any of that: make the window very small and if you can open many tabs (like in Firefox or Gedit), then try to drag the window to a different place.
Frustrating, isn't it? I bet you accidentally clicked on a tab or a menu button a few times.

You can hide the menu button/tab bar but only when the window contains a single tab by setting browser.tabs.autohide to true i.e. uncheck Preferences -> Tabs -> Always show the tab bar.

You can also hide the tab bar, regardless of how many tabs currently opened, by Ctrl-\ (backslash).

The only way to ride!

Not natively. That probably comes from one of your extensions.

You could use keyconfig to hide the tab bar with a keyboard shortcut that you assign:

Code: Select all

gBrowser.setStripVisibilityTo(!gBrowser.getStripVisibility());
(edit: code is from here)

Try the "Hide Tabbar" extension from CAA (https://ca-archive.us.to/storage/12/127 ... n=download). Note that the default shortcut key for this extension is "Ctrl + F11", but you can change this shortcut, at any time, in the extension's options.

Try the Titlebar Tool extension from APMO.

Other than hiding the title text, Titlebar Tool seems to do nothing for me (not noticeably thinner) and doesn't have options to set (unless in about.config). I don't need it, I was just experimenting. It did bump hamburger menu button off navigation tool bar but I put that back (old, known issue with Mozilla code). EDIT: I see, you have to have Tabs on Top. But even then that's only in Maximized mode.

OK, I did disable/remove/undo/enable and now I see the thin title bar in Restore mode too. Something seems to have interfered with it the first time.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but in a maximized mode there's a tiny space between List All Tabs and Minimize button for you to grab and move the window around. For me, that's just enough space to do it, so why not have the same space in a smaller window size, which would serve the purpose?

Thank you all very much for your fast help!

The best solution that functions for me is using browser.tabs.autohide in about:config. It would be nice though if this would be possible with more tabs, just like in a maximized mode, where there's also a space to grab and move the window between List All Tabs and Minimize button, so that feature stays in place.

The other extensions suggested didn't work for me for some reason.

Thanks again,
Alex

If you can provide the extension you're using to do that, that would be great.

I'm using Tab Utilities Phoenix, which provides that function.

I have my own pure CSS solution to make drop-down toolbox without page shifting.
Since the page is not shifting, the browser does not waste time to recalculate it.
It turned out to be difficult to do for many reasons, in particular because of the bug 579776.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=579776

userChrome.css:

Code: Select all

#navigator-toolbox { position: fixed; left: 0px; right: 0px; top: -200px; height: 210px; }
#browser-panel { padding-top: 10px; }
#navigator-toolbox > toolbar { width : 100%; }
#navigator-toolbox > toolbar[collapsed="true"],
#navigator-toolbox > toolbar[moz-collapsed="true"] { display: none; }
#navigator-toolbox:hover,
#navigator-toolbox[inFullscreen="true"],
#navigator-toolbox[customizing="true"] { top: 0px; height: initial; }
#main-window[inFullscreen="true"] #browser-panel { padding-top: 0px; }
