Pale Moon (Linux) consuming 100% of CPU core, won't relinquish unless app closed.

Unread post by BenFenner » 2021-03-01, 16:38

I believe this is new for 29.x but can't be sure.
Typically after less than 30 minutes of browsing, and fewer than ~12 total tabs I will get into a situation where Pale Moon consumes 100% of any one of the PCU cores at any given time. It is doing right now as I type this. The application still performs decently well, but my CPU fans don't love it. ;)
(I don't seem to have this problem on the 4 other Windows 7 machines I run, so I'm reporting this in the Linux section.)

I will then open a new tab to about:blank and close all of the other tabs, one-by-one, slowly trying to see which one is to blame. The CPU usage never drops, even once I've closed all of the original tabs (but leaving the single blank tab open) and left things for a few hours.
Once I close the application, after ~30 seconds the Pale Moon process relinquishes the CPU and memory, closing seemingly properly.

Starting the browser again will have me in this situation again withing 30-60 minutes. More intensive web sites like Facebook cause this to happen sooner, but are not required.
I'm sorry I don't have better steps to reproduce the problem. If I can narrow it down, I will.

I have Pale Moon remember which tabs I have open upon closing, and it restores them when I re-launch the browser. That is a new change for me, and shouldn't have anything to do with this problem. I actually turned on this setting because of this problem. It is saving me time, now that I am restarting PM so often.

I know I've left some details out, so please let me know what else I can provide. I will be happy to oblige.

Re: Pale Moon (Linux) consuming 100% of CPU core, won't relinquish unless app closed.

Oh, and one more thing of note.

When I restart the browser, I'm told Pale Moon is not my default browser, and would I like to make it so? I choose "yes" to make it my default browser and make sure the checkbox is checked to always perform this check when starting Pale Moon.
However, it often asks me this question now after restarting the browser.
I've never seen this issue before on any of my 5 machines...

(If it matters, this is often (always?) after clicking a link in a Thunderbird e-mail to initiate launching of Pale Moon.)

I'm also going to try to keep better track of if this is happening because of OS updates or not.
It might be that this only happens after applying OS updates, but before restarting the computer.
(Sometimes the OS updates require a restart, sometimes not. Either way, I often avoid a restart for possibly a few days, as I'm busy doing actual work and it takes a long time to get back to where I was after a restart.)

Something popping up already is this: "GPU Accelerated Windows: 0/1 Basic (OMTC)".
As you can see by that 0/1, the rendering on the screen is performed entirely by the CPU, which explains the 100% usage, since both the UI and actual web content are pretty heavy targets.
You migth want to scan the browser's preferences window looking for hardware acceleration-related settings.
If it still doesn't work, check your drivers.

HW Accel on linux is still spotty at best. You CAN force it on but generally saying "look for prefs" isn't recommended when this is a long standing well documented specific thing.

If you do force enable it and you start seeing graphical glitches then it is a true HW incompatibility otherwise just treat it as a soft mostly not a problem maybe incompatibility that can largely be ignored by leaving it forced on.

Well, the standard preferences UI has a setting to use accelaration when available, before forcing its use.
I haven't scanned the full list of informations, but maybe he accidentally unticked that checkbox or something like that.

Thank you for the responses vannilla and Tobin.
Before getting into the heart of the recent discussion, I will say that yes, I have forced HW acceleration on. I'd forgotten about that. I did this after YouTube playback pegged the CPU, as did window resizing.
The setting changed caused no visual glitches, and did allow YouTube videos to play without any real spike in CPU usage. At the time, I was happy with the change and noticed no ill effects.
I understand that it may have caused the issue in this thread. Let me read your posts again above and come up with a more detailed response.

That is odd to hear, as I was under the impression I'd enabled HW (GPU) acceleration with some about:config changes a few weeks back...
AT the time I knew it wasn't well supported on Linux, but I went ahead with it anyway as a calculated risk. :shifty:

Maybe that setting has been reverted somehow? I thought I had it enabled...
I will try to re-enable, or at least check to see if my settings were reverted.

Edit: Regardless of HW accel, you wouldn't think a single tab with nothing displayed would cause such a CPU spike to hold forever.

This is the strangest thing. I don't know how HW accel got turned off, but I do believe I had it on few weeks back when I noticed high CPU usage with YouTube. I didn't use the preference menu though, as I'm not sure that option existed at the time? Or I missed it? But I ended up changing a few setting in about:config that I found elsewhere in my searching.

I've now turned on HW acceleration, but haven't chosen the option to force it when not available.

I'll rock like this for a bit and see how things go. So far, it's looking promising.

Please also remember what Tobin said about support on Linux and that some sites are unfortunately very heavy and will cause spikes in CPU usage, even if temporarily.

That's not quite what I remember from my reading of Mozilla and UXP code -- that's true on Windows, sure. But on Linux, all graphics drivers are considered buggy enough that even checking "Use hardware acceleration when available" isn't enough; all graphics drivers are considered buggy. On Linux, to get graphics acceleration (beyond mere XRender-based acceleration, which thanks to the design of the X protocol is pretty lousy quite frankly), you must force-enable graphics acceleration using the second preference.

That said, that's my experience. Am I wrong, Moonchild?

Why don't you answer the question instead of telling people that they are not wanted?

I did contribute to the thread or was your ancient CPU not able to process my earlier post? The Squash just spouts shit without knowing what he is talking about so I told him to go away.

Besides, I can do both.

Just curious.

Since Ben stated in his first post he is using Linux Mint and this is a linux forum, why are you asking him about your comment above?
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox

I am using both. Did you miss that in my original post? I have 4 PCs in regular rotation running Windows 7, and 1 PC in regular rotation running Linux Mint. I also have a couple other PCs with Windows XP that rarely see the light of day but come out when I need to tune an old automotive stand-alone ECU via serial port, or similar.

I am using Linux on this one machine because I'm a web developer by trade, and I work mainly in Ruby on Rails. I've tried to do web development with git and Ruby on Rails before on Windows 7 in a production environment. Oh how I wished I could have gotten it to work. I lasted a few months even with cygwin and a few other workarounds, but eventually ran into insurmountable roadblocks. I had MacOS and Linux as my only options, and I think I'd change careers before using MacOS, so here I am on Linux for less than 20% of my PCs. Linux pays the bills, and quite well. Such is life.

(I do manage to work my pet PHP project quite well in Windows. I would like to think I could do PHP on Windows in a professional environment, but I may never find out. I've always had to run Linux for work.)

And while I'm on the topic, I am loving my new job, and left my previous one (with no new job lined up) in large part because I was told by our completely incompetent IT department that I could no longer develop web sites using Pale Moon. So instead of giving it up, I left and eventually (16 months later) found a new shop. So far it's been nothing short of life changing in every good way a new job can be.

It's been a while since I've seen this issue pop up. If I make it through today without it arising, I'll mark this as solved.

Just wanted to add that this "do you want to make default?" issue is not related to the main issue you've been experiencing. I've been having it too, and it happens when you open Pale Moon from Thunderbird.
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=25200&p=199331

The workaround is to actually choose "No" when you open PM from Thunderbird. If you choose yes, the default browser will be set to Thunderbird, so next time you open PM it will think it's not default.

Oh wow, great info and good detective work ZFR77.
Thanks for posting. I'm sure I'll be able to avoid the prompt with your tip. :D

Edit: I can't post in that thread since it is locked (too old?). Is there a bug report link for this somewhere? I'd love to take a look.
Also, the only way to avoid this is to stop PM from checking if it is the default browser. I can't just click "No" at the prompt and have the prompt no longer appear. I have to disable the default broswer check. That is not ideal.
