Frequent pausing of process.

Unread post by NovaDelta » 2021-01-10, 22:34

So I've been having some issues regarding Pale Moon for the past few months. When the browser has been running for long enough it starts to hang for a few seconds before returning to normal. I can't recall exactly what update this started in or what. So here is my information and observations. I hope you can learn more from this than I have.

Windows 7 Professional 7601
PM Version: 28.17.0 x64

While I do admit to using a LOT of tabs. I used to use the same amount of tabs of pretty much the same things and I didnt't have the issue before. It might also be hardware aging issues. I did a fresh install of Windows recently and not long after I started seeing the issue pop up again.

Here is a picture I made in paint showing graphs and whatnot from Process Explorer, Resource Monitor, and Task Manager

Thanks for you help

I find that my palemoon does this if at any time during that session I open facebook. I'll have to restart palemoon to get it to go away if I ever go to facebook.

Yea, I spend a lot of time on facebook and experience that quite often. I've learned to live with it.

Unfortunately I don't use Facebook so this doesn't help me very much. The most consistent tabs I usually keep open are Discord and Youtube

Since you mentioned on your first post that you usually open a lot of tabs, maybe opening multiple YouTube tabs is causing the issue? I also experience slow-downs with multiple YouTube videos opened on the browser, and it's due to high memory usage. But a single YouTube tab shouldn't cause the browser to hang, unless you opened up a really long comment thread. I don't think Discord can hang the browser either, unless you're in a channel with a lot of gifs.

It could be? I haven't tested it without Youtube open as that's usually why I keep the browser opening. Although I remember a few months ago I didn't have the issue and I used roughly the same and same amount of tabs as I do now.

Hmm... yeah I've had a few issues with it. I'll disable it and see if Palemoon starts slowing down again

When the browser has been running for long enough it starts to hang for a few seconds before returning to normal.
I'd like to chime in and confirm the general tendency for PM to slow down and eventually pause for 4 or 6 seconds ... AFTER I've been running a while with 20 to 40 tabs open ... AND with several of them linked to YouTube videos (although I use the setting that instructs PM not to refresh tabs until I return to them).

I can clear the condition by exiting PM and restarting with all of the same tabs.
maybe opening multiple YouTube tabs is causing the issue?
I suspect some kind of cache management issue eventually bogs things down. My recollection is that this became a problem about 4 or 5 months ago.

Anyway, that's my situation. I consider a program restart to be a reasonable work around.

cache management
Why specifically cache management and not something else?
For what is worth it might be because of how YouTube is structured, which has nothing to do with cache.

This thread has gone stale but looks like the same problem here https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26469 for those coming across this thread.
