pale moon has become sluggish, hangs, etc

Unread post by moonstructures » 2011-11-01, 12:51

I discovered Pale Moon a couple months ago, downloaded it (I believe I have the latest version now) and when I started using it, I was elated that I found a browser that was fast, easy to use, theme I have is beautiful, but in the last couple of weeks it has been really disappointing in that it has a hard time opening pages, websites, etc. Hangs continuously, but then at times will become what it was originally, speedy and great. I don't want to give up on this browser, in the beginning I thought (and still do) this is the best browser ever, and so would like to know what else I can try to get it back to what it really is, the BEST.
I've searched this forum, so I tried "disabling addons" and that did work but I don't want to use Pale Moon without the addons. I lowered storage cache to 200 MB, suggested 100 but dont think 100 is a big difference. I don't really have that many addons, the extension bar is all, I think about 9 plugins, java platform, deployment, Microsoft DRM is(on there twice), don't know why, but disabled one of them just now, shockwave flash, Windows presentation...dynamic link library, Foxit Reader are basically it except for theme.
Anyone have any suggestions what else I can try? Thanks

If you could list exactly which add-ons you use and what theme you are using (and if it's a "lightweight" (persona) or "full" theme), that would be a great help. since you say it is solved with disabling add-ons that's the most logical place to start.
Microsoft DRM is normally listed twice if you have it installed - they are for 2 different functions of Digital Rights Management. Although you may want to check if you really need them - Are you downloading or streaming DRM-protected content with Pale Moon that needs the plugins? Same for Windows Presentation Foundation - most people can safely disable that.

EDIT: You may also want to try and clean your places database and do some maintenance on it - it tends to help a lot if you use the browser extensively every day; the database can get out of control.
Suggested: http://code.google.com/p/placescleaner/ -- I use that one myself.

I thought I would post how things were regarding the sluggish movement of Palemoon, it seems to be somewhat better, its hard to measure because sometimes it will be real fast and at times will hang to some degree. Like, having just now come into the forum, when I clicked 'help' at the top to migrate here, it kept at the "connecting" and took about 30 second to 45 second to connect, but at times in the past would connect in 5 to 10 seconds. And this is the rule elsewhere, such as if I connect into gmail, lets say I get a zdnet newsletter, and in it will be a link to download a software, clicking that link sometimes hangs big time. So it seems a link within a link tends to be slow. Also, if I'm look at you tube videos, I do quite a bit and I seem to have problems on and off like the video will stop saying "there is an error, try later" and the video stops and is a "black blank", so what I do is just reload the page and the vid will start up again at the beginning, I'll have to move the bar to where it was before it stopped. It has happened before that I will be asked (via a popup message) to download Adobe Flash, even though it's already been download previously.
I wanted to ask, do an extensive list of bookmarks slow down Palemoon? Could you list a few of the most relevant apps or configurations, anything you think that slows down a browser that I might check? This is still my favorite browser, I was using IE 8, and that browser is so damned buggy and not worth the headache, I've had to install/uninstall too many times, I finally said BYE! Thats when I went and looked for browser not in the IE engine, and came across Palemoon and SeaMonkey, Palemoon is and has been my default since I found it. SeaMonkey (good browser too) is the second and only other browser I use. I've got IE 7 downloaded and sits there in the background where it belongs. I think IE 7 is better than 8 anyway. But, I am going to get Palemoon going the way it should, if it kills me. I think it's something I'm doing or not doing. I do like this theme too, I don't want to get rid of it.
Thanks for any help.

I'm running four browsers. Pale Moon v7.0.1 which I use as my default browser, Firefox 7.0.1 as my backup browser, an old and outdated SeaMonkey v2.0.14 (intensely dislike the new Data Manager which started with versions 2.1 through 2.4) and since I have a Windows 7 machine bought a year ago, it came with IE8.

All the sites I access with Pale Moon, it's very fast to load. It seems the only sub site slow to load is the Pale Moon forums site and I think it has something to do with the server or servers if more than one is used to keep it separate from the main Pale Moon website ( http://www.palemoon.org ).

Of course, I'm running the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system with dual core i7 processor and 16 gigs of memory which may have something to do with how fast Pale Moon operates.

HP had to replace my hard drive on my Windows 7 machine and while it was down, I was using my Windows XP backup machine with (I think) a Pentium 4 processor and only 1 gig of memory and I noticed sites were slower to load with all four browsers listed above on the XP machine.

BTW, being a non technical (computer illiterate) person, the only two extensions I use with both Pale Moon and Firefox is IE Tab V2 and NoSquint.
Linux Mint 22.1 (Xia) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
MX Linux 23.6 (Libretto) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 12.11 (Bookworm) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

You're right, the forums are run on an in-house (non-dedicated) little server over DSL (it's sitting on my desk next to my monitor). So of course it will be slower than the main site which is comfortably nestled in a large data center.
