Youtube Videos that don't play in Pale Moon (legacy FF problem)

Post by Hanna » 2020-02-22, 16:57

Hi all - Sometimes I have Youtube videos that simply won't play in Pale Mopon0. Either they just load, or they give some meaningless error. I can always play them in other browsers. This is a long-running problem, I had it for years in my Firefox setup which was migrated to Pale Moon. It's not Adblock Plus, because I turned that off for Youtube (pain in the neck but I needed to try it). Does anyone else have this problem and do you have any idea what could be causing it?

So you imported a non-working profile to PM. Please create a new profile in PM and check if it still happens.
Then install your addons bit by bit and check again to find the specific issue.

I don't want to set up a new profile from scratch - that's why I imported the old profile. I realise that this might be worth trying, but the question was to see if anybody is aware of this problem and happens to have come across an explanation or a fix.

The whole point of using Pale Moon was to be able to use my existing profile and not have to set everything up again. The profile has been great since I started using Firefox early 2000s and if I wanted to ditch it and start from scratch, I would have. Everything else apart from 1/10 youtube videos is working absolutely fine and is set up exactly as I want it. Doing that over from scratch with all settings of all extensions etc, would take a week.

You can use Pale Moon Sync and "import/export settings" options present in individual extensions.

Testing with a new, pristine, unmodified profile is simply a standard troubleshooting method to rule out any sort of problem (be it with an extension, a preference, file corruption, etc.) in your current over-ten-years-old imported profile. If you still have problems playing those videos with the new unmodified profile, then we know it's not something in your old profile that's interfering with the playback. If the new pristine profile plays the videos that your old profile doesn't, then yes there is something in your old profile that is interfering with the playback. But we'll never know for sure unless you try it with a new profile.

It is easy to create one without deleting the old one.
Just run

Code: Select all

palemoon --ProfileManager
to run the Profile Manager.

Try to go into the settings and check if Media Source Extensions are activated. Some videos (especially live strems) don't run in my PM when it is disabled.
