Since I did the change, pages on Youtube appears to loads much more slowly, mainly on people's account (main) page. Is this normal/an after-effect from the edit ?
It's normal, because what you are looking at is the considerably slower "new" design for YouTube.

but Ant Downloader doesn't catch the name of the video anymore...
I'm pretty sure that kind of thing is on purpose from YT's side.

Thank you!!! That worked, I didn't even need to reboot Pale Moon, just reload the YouTube tab.

Have you given some thought the extension above, it was probably for the classic old YT interface and the Ant Downloader may not work in the new YT interface. Disable the extension and see if it catches the name of the video.

I don't use a lot of extensions. I only use two extensions and they are NoSquint and uBlock Origin. I have never used any extensions for YouTube because I have been on the new YT interface for the last three years.

I quit using downloader extensions. YT has changed and my old downloader (NetVideoHunter) stopped working. I now use the online downloader, TubeNinja, with their bookmarklet. It's so simple to use and if YouTube changes things again, TubeNinja will update their capture.

This isn't exactly the browser's problem, now is it? Please ask for potential alternatives in the "Extensions" board, not in this thread. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the UA update guys! I'll have to get used to it but I guess that's what they want with us. Good thing is that two of my scripts work on it but I guess I'll do away with the Polymer Disable one soon once the old layout is gutted. I'm already acquainted with it on mobile and TV so this is nothing much for me.

While this won't affect the underlying issue, if the warning banner annoys you it's possible to hide it cosmetically with an adblocking rule. If you wish to hide it, add the following rule to your personal filters:

Code: Select all

youtube.com##.alerts-wrapper
funny thing is... my main machine wasn't getting these alerts, but my mom's laptop was. so i put the agent overrides, in... it stopped the messages, but the (new) youtube page was totally broken. no playlists... buncha blank round spots for icons? the next video wouldn't play... it sucked. :X

now my main machine is getting the Dire Warning. which i will ignore, but this makes it so much easier.

Night Wing, I followed your instructions...
Night Wing wrote:

….Changing the default user agent string for YouTube is not hard. It is just takes a few steps....

...All you have to do is clear the address in your Navigation/Address bar to make it "blank". Then type "about:config" (without the quote marks). Then click (or tap) your Enter key. Once on the next page, acknowledge the "Dragons be here" and click on "I promise to be careful" prompt.

When the next page appears, in the long Search box, type in (without the quote marks) "general.useragent.override.youtube.com" and then change the default Value string for YouTube to one of the three user agent codes [found above, with quite a few choices], depending on your operating system. I'm sure you know how to delete the old code [turns out "right click" on it to edit Value]. Then follow the prompts and you're done.

Then exit Pale Moon and then re-boot Pale Moon. Then go to YouTube and you'll see the new YouTube interface. This "isn't" rocket science or advanced mathematics. Some of you people are making it hard when it isn't.
And it worked. It's not so much that I didn't want to do it or that folks think it's "hard when it isn't", but that for many years I've been my own and only tech support and if I screw up, I don't know if there is an "undo" feature. Also, you advise "Then follow the prompts and you're done." Well, there were zero prompts (oh, in Win 10, 64 bit). I typed *.* in the search bar and got everything in that area of my OS, but still no prompts. So I sighed and went back to the main navigation/address bar and searched for any old YouTube channel (first a page with a list of videos, then a single video from that page). That worked: no banner and the page looked different, so it must be the new standard. Meh. While I like watching videos live, many times I'll grab the url and download the video to watch later and maybe keep, so I'll just be doing that more.

I wouldn't have to worry so much about YT vs Pale Moon if YT hadn't stopped sending me new video upload alerts just after Christmas when I was changing ISPs anyhow.

But mainly: thank you for helping me prove to myself yet again that my dad passed along some genes for tinkering with electronics, in this case computers he never dreamed of (though he worked with them as an Air Force contractor).

For everyone hating polymer, you can still disable it after the new update (for as long as YouTube still has it available as an option which probably won't be long) by using the url:
https://www.youtube.com/?disable_polymer=1
This will provide you with the old layout without having to mess with the user agents

Off-topic:
Throw YT downloader apps to the curb and use command line 'youtube-dl'. It's fast and free - works on most video sites, not just YT. Also pulls down age restricted vids without having to log in to YT or even have an account. You'll never be for want of how to d/l a video again.

Do you think there's a way to ''automate'' (quote - unquote) the process of adding ?disable_polymer=1 at the end of Youtube pages ?

Yes, there should be. It is like replacing http with https mady by HTTPS Always.
Maybe that works for other parts of the URL too.
I don't have experience with that.

I edited my YouTube cookie about a year ago and I'm still getting the old layout. This may not last for long. I'll deal with the new layout when the cookie edit goes away.

Edit Cookie for YouTube's Old Layout:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeAgxcM9tIk

1. Set permissions (Page Info Window) in PM to "Allow" cookies at YouTube.
2. Open the Web Developer Inspector Tool by pressing F12.
3. Click on the "Gear" Toolbox Options button in the upper right corner.
4. Check the "Storage" box under Default Developer Tools.
5. Click on the Storage button in the toolbar.
6. Go to the YouTube site in the browser.
7. Click on Cookies in the left column of the Inspector
8. Click on the YouTube cookie.
9. Select the "PREF" cookie in the Name column.
10. Double click the line in the Value window.
11. Paste either &f6=43418 or &f6=8 after f1=50000000

Example: f1=50000000&f6=43418

12. Click on the "Gear" Toolbox Options button in the upper right corner.
13. Uncheck the "Storage" box under Default Developer Tools.
14. Close the Web Developer Inspector Tool.
15. Set permissions in PM to "Use Default" for cookies at YouTube.

Might as well bring it up, since I found the correct thread.

Changing my user agent helped resolve the problem. (I am using the Mac community build, so upgrading was not an option)
