Try this one:

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; WOW64; x64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0
Yes, that works.

arte seems to sniff for the browser locale. Switching PM 28.7.1 / linux-x86 to a "de"-localized profile worked out fine for me ;)

edit*: In their FAQ Firefox is supported from 65+, but videos also played well in 52.9.0. Changing UAs in PM-en.us and toggling geo.enabled brought nothing but 500's for me.

I wish people would not throw http errors arbitrarity. It's incredibly bad practice (and breaking specs, since you're throwing the wrong error) and makes troubleshooting pretty much impossible..
What they're believed to be doing, is what I call acting like malware!

At the other extreme is the new fashion of never showing a 404 for broken links and simply redirecting you to the main page as though nothing happened. Plenty of news sites are guilty of this. I ran Bookmarks Checker on my huge list of bookmarks imported from del.icio.us, and for many sites it was just going to the main page.

I did a last test, this time with a fresh profile (vanilla install of Pale Moon 28.7.1 portable).
The video from ARTE plays fine out of the box with a vanilla Pale Moon 28.7.1.
This should apply to everyone connecting from a region (e.g. DE) that isn't affected by geo-blocking.

As for how to circumvent geo-blocking, that's another story and IMHO not subject of this topic.
Anyway, I'm almost sure that geo-blocking wasn't the reason why the thread starter couldn't watch the video.

As for the error 500 massage, sadly it gets misused by some content providers, rendering this error message useless.
An appropriate and honest error message in such cases would be: "F*ck you, I won't deliver my content as long as some of your browser settings aren't to my like".

So you didn't even need to install the german locale :scratch head:?

edit*: In this case, everybody pls ignore my upper post :?

He's based in Germany, so the geoblock doesn't affect him.

But I sit there too and I got loads of blocks on arte.tv - until I switched to another localised profile.

Indeed. I used to visit that channel quite often with no problems in PM, but it's a while back, so I guess they updated their own player, design, policy, ... whatever
Off-topic:
thx, that's my son. He eats too much.

Nope. Never did so since I switched to Pale Moon.
I assume that geo-blocking is based on the IP address.

However, you could test with a vanilla 28.7.1. It should work for you too.
