DNS prefetching toggle can't be changed

Unread post by moonbat » 2019-08-20, 00:56

I read this earlier thread and I understand it's a bad idea to enable it, but apart from that the preference seems to be stuck regardless of trying to tick the option in PM Commander or directly trying to set network.dns.disablePrefetch to false. I can't either set the option to false in about:config, or use PM Commander to change it. Is this by design, or a bug? Using Linux Mint 19.2, and latest 28.6.1 x64 build.

Related query - the prefetch service option in PM commander (prefetch predicted traffic/enable predictive service) - is it a good practice to use that or should it be turned off for similar reasons as for DNS prefetch?

What do you mean with "stuck" and "can't change"?

If I use PM Commander, I cannot enable the checkbox for DNS prefetching no matter what. I tab to it (so the whole field has a focus rectangle around it) and press space, I mouseclick - nothing happens and it stays unchecked.

In about:config, if I right-click->Toggle the setting, nothing happens.

So I'm wondering if there's some other reason it can't be changed, or it's some UI toolkit issue. Not sure what version of GTK Mint 19.2 uses, but I've never had any UI problems with PM (or Basilisk) so far.

Try disabling whatever it is that adds the comment.

3.20, but official releases of Pale Moon use GTK 2 and GTK 2 on Debian derivatives hasn't changed for a while.

Do you see any errors in the console? Have you tried disabling all other add-ons?

Took a while because I have around 45 extensions, though I should've realized right away - the culprit was FoxyProxy(the PM port).
From their FAQ -
FoxyProxy disables DNS prefetching under certain conditions. It does this because DNS prefetching does not respect proxy rules. In other words, if DNS pretching is enabled but you want DNS lookups to occur through a proxy server, you’re out-of-luck.
I've been playing around with I2P, and I setup FoxyProxy so that all URLs with a .i2p TLD get auto-routed through the local proxy that it provides.

Aside, I noticed that only 9 or 20% of my extensions are old Firefox versions - the rest are all targeted at PM
