Tray Icon

Unread post by cosmicfoole » 2019-07-04, 14:37

Pale Moon tray icon changed color. Used to be a dark blue. Now it is more white than blue and is very hard to see. Tried everything, but cannot change it back. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, the new icon is useless on a gray classic Windows task bar, there are several treads about this.
Change the icon to something else until this mistake is corrected.
Methode is depending on your Windows version.

I changed Palemoon's icon in Start menu and it worked for me (you may need to restart browser)

Right, well, to satisfy all these hordes of people still on Win2k classic mode, how about this.

this is how I changed the icon, use Resource Hacker:

https://www.howtogeek.com/75983/stupid-geek-tricks-how-to-modify-the-icon-of-an-.exe-file/

and choose whatever exe file you like, I used c:\windows\explorer.exe and this is the result:

Sure, do whatever you want on your own system. I'm still trying to improve it.

Well, we could of course change our 3 dimensional, high resolution multicolour interface with the 2 dimensional, low resolution monochrome interface that is called "modern" by M$.

Your flat panel isn't 3-dimensional.

I guess it's better. Until I have it in use on my computer I don't know how different it will look.

I really would recommend the method described here over the Resource Hacker method. If you use Resource Hacker to change your icon, you will have to do it again and again after every update or reinstall of Pale Moon.

I'm cool with changing the icon every time Pale Moon has a new version, it doesn't took more than 5 minutes.

I like the new icon even without updated version but I don't use Win Classic theme.

For some reason when in Pale Moon forum it still shows the OLD icon in the titlebar. NEW icon shows in tab. Is this forum problem or something I can fix on my side?

EDIT: Never mind, I was able to fix this issue.

Why hack the exe when you can simply change the shortcut icon?

I, too, am unhappy with the new look of the icon (fyi, it's not called a "tray" icon).

Here is how it looks on my Windows 7 computer:
Image

I don't understand what was wrong with the old icon. It had more depth with the light and shadow. Making a blander more gray icon is inevitably going to look bad against some backgrounds.

May I suggest reverting to the old icon but perhaps making the edge more defined at smaller sizes so that it stands out more. e.g.

I have extracted the old icon from a previous version of Pale Moon, then edited the file "Pale Moon web browser.lnk" which is located in "\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar" folder (Windows 7). I have changed the default icon to the old one - et voilà!

Changing the Shortcut icon does nothing to make it show up better in the TaskBar and Tabs.

Stop making suggestions to make the icon ugly as hell.
What is in 28.6.0.1 is adjusted for everyone's benefit and is quite well-defined even on poor backgrounds. If you don't like it, then that's simply too bad. This branding change was a few months in the making as People -asked- for a more stylized icon/logo. Just take some time getting used to it. This is your brain being obnoxious about change, not us.

The new icon is:
  • A proper reflection of the product name. "Pale Moon", not "Blue Moon"
  • In line with the artwork on the website
  • Adapted (in .1) so a Pale Moon on a Pale Background is still properly defined
And if you still hate it at this point, you can replace it with your own icon of choice by dropping relevant resources in designated application folders, as outlined in multiple threads now. Please don't use resource hackers for this, it's not needed and will break digital signatures as well as potentially inherent security of the .exe

P.S.: it's not a "tray icon". This isn't the system tray we're talking about.

P.P.S.: If after all this you still want to complain... please just don't. You'll likely be told to piss off, and not just by Tobin.

I am saddened that there is so much antagonism from the team about the new icon. I see there was a thread previously to discuss ideas, sadly I only saw it after the deed had been done otherwise I would have commented. I certainly don't like the new icon, it is so bland that it does nothing to promote PM, but I guess I will live with it. I cannot see why it was changed. And I certainly don't appreciate the four letter words used by some in this thread, that is uncalled for, we should at least be polite.
