PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
I was happily typing away at my reply to someone when the updater decided to pop up that 28.6 is available (I always have mine at check for updates, but let me decide). Oh crap, I thought, I would have preferred to not update as I have never had good experiences by immediately updating, but oh well Pale Moon has yet to fail me. Oh how wrong could I be, the once smooth browsing experience I had previously is now gone and replaced with noticeable delay and a great increase in loading times (10+ seconds to load five tabs, from just a couple seconds before). It feels like the cache is maxed out constantly. Cleared my cache with no success. The worst part yet is that I found out there is no way to downgrade. Despite all of this, I begin to troubleshoot with safe mode as thats the quickest way to find out if somethings wrong.
Launch in safe mode with addons disabled, works like a charm, still not feeling as quick as my previous installation, but okay. I restart Pale Moon with all addons disabled and it goes back to being laggy and slow. With that, its pointless to test individual addons if none are enabled to begin with. Next step I tried was backing up and renaming the appdata folder to see if the profile was the culprit. Stock PM loads up, just as slow as I began. I deleted the newly created folder installed a 27.9.4, then 28.5.2 and both of them also are slow and laggy as well. Well since the previous versions don't work, I might as well update back to 28.6, and then I notice even more problems. Every page now has ghosting from a previous tab I switched from. I'm at a loss now because the latest update has all but ruined Pale Moon for me.
Now, if you've managed to stick through my rant riddled with steps I've taken to troubleshoot, then thank you for putting up with this. It's very frustrating to have something work with no issues to all of the sudden be updated and now worthless.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
May be you got hardware failure together with the update, but certainly not because of it. Check the overheat.

@ bigkahuna360
I run 64 bit linux and 32 bit windows Pale Moon 28.6.0 using 4 different computers (2 desktop towers, 2 laptops) comprising 9 different hard drives and speaking just for myself, Pale Moon 28.6.0 is not buggy or laggy at all for me.
It could be your problem might be a hardware related. Hard drives do wear out over time. Did you test your hard drive?

The ghosting of other tab contents is definitely odd; certainly not any behavior that is in Pale Moon code. Are you using any system tools that manipulate window transparency that could confuse the compositor? Because if for some reason all opened tabs are being composited one on top of the other then that would most definitely cause severe lag.

As another poster mentioned, I guess before anyone can offer meaningful help, some info about your software and hardware environment is required.

My bad for the late reply, when I posted this, it said I would receive an email notification that it was posted. Ah! Cant believe I forgot to include hardware, I have a Eurocom X4C with a Samsung SM951 500GB and Windows 10 Pro x64. My 9700k's temps are sitting at a comfortable 45°C and theres no errors on my drives. Defrags are run weekly. Never overheats during extended gaming sessions. I don't have any programs that modify Windows or its functionality.
EDIT: I did go back to 28.5.2 since it felt a little faster than 8.6. Will update again upon request.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
The latest version is 28.6.0.1. I've updated on four Win 7x64 and two Win 10 x64 machines with no lags or bugs whatsoever, and I also had no problems with 28.6. on all these machines.
Not that it's anything new on my part, I'm a bit confused about your hardware: "...a Samsung SM951 500GB and Windows 10 Pro x64 ... and theres no errors on my drives. Defrags are run weekly".
The only "drive" you mentioned is the Samsung M.2 device, yet you wrote "...theres no errors on my drives".
Furthermore, do you really defrag the SM951 weekly? It's always been my understanding that SSDs shouldn't be defragged. Of course the debate about whether to defrag even normal HDDs is also long and dragged out. Whatever.
In regard to the ghosting, have you by any chance updated to Win 10 x64 v. 1903? If so, you might take a look at this:

Beyond this, sorry, but I'm not able to understand (in German nachvollziehen) your problem.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
Even on 28.5.2 you have graphics diagnostics failures (those should never show on a healthy system), so there does seem to be something wrong with the use and allocation of textures on your video driver/hardware combination.
Maybe an obvious step, but have you tried switching the PC off and on again? Or do you just keep it running 24/7?

Do you perhaps mean "enabled" in the second sentence?bigkahuna360 wrote: ↑2019-07-03, 06:37... In any case, it seems really weird that when you tested safe mode, it "works (sic.) like a charm", but with a new profile, "Stock PM loads up, just as slow as I began". I'm certainly no computer expert, but what you've presented contrasts with anything I've experienced in over twenty years with Netscape, Firefox, and now PaleMoon.
Given what you've described so far, to me it appears farfetched to believe the problem lies with PaleMoon. I have a feeling that the lack of response you're getting is because what you've described seems anomalous; if anyone on the forum had experienced anything even remotely similar, you'd have likely already heard about it.

Note that Safe Mode also disables hardware accelerated rendering.

Yes i thing the issuse with videocard driver. Next, if after things above no progress, try with disabled hardware acceleration.
Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
I can confirm this issue. 28.6 was working good, but the new update 28.6.0.1 has made the browser noticeably buggy. It stutters and rendering has become somewhat slow.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
1. This isn't really what the OP wrote; in bigkahuna360's case, the problem apparently began with 28.6.
2. Could you kindly provide a bit of info about your system, please? Thank you.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
I had been noticing some more recent laggy behavior (increase in the frequency of "Not responding" behavior) in the browser.
For whatever reason, in my case I found that by disabling (unchecking) "hardware acceleration (when available)" (under Preferences/General Tab), which I've been using for sometime, appears to noticeably mitigate the laggy behavior in the browser (more specifically reducing the "Not responding" behavior I was getting before). I'm not saying this eliminates the laggy behavior altogether (part of my problem could be my ISP wireless connection as well as I do get some similar behavior in other apps on my computer) but I can say I do observe a very noticeable browser improvement however in regards to the issue discussed here with this "hardware acceleration" option disabled. Somebody else with more knowledge in this matter may be able to explain why this is perhaps the case (as my results would seem to be a bit counter-intuitive concerning this option).....
On this point, in regards to (test results in "safe-mode"):

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
@JoeyG, I've been running SSDs for almost 10 years now (Damn do I feel old now) and I used to think the same thing. Don't defrag your SSDs or it might cause damage to them yadda yadda, but after my thousandth Windows installation after corrupting various files via overclocking, I have long since given up or really caring about turning off auto defrags and I haven't noticed any change in performance or stability. Could be just older SSDs that are affected or just that they are made differently now, I have no idea.
Sorry, I didn't think the "drives" part would cause confusion. I have a FireCuda 2TB for mass storage and I figured it would be best to specify that all drives are in working order. Theres no RAID or special setups. I just updated to 28.6.0.1 and have not noticed any difference and I am still on Windows 10 x64 v1803. This version also has that feature you listed, however thats been enabled for a very long time now.
I did mean disabled in regards to your next post. I wanted to note that in Safe Mode, it worked perfectly with everything disabled, but when not in Safe Mode with everything disabled, it was still slow. It's a very annoying issue as I've never had this issue before either.
@Moonchild, I'll download some older video drivers and see if that fixes the issue, these were the latest GPU drivers available. I restart my PC regularly or as needed.
@Pale Moon Rising, I'll disable acceleration in preferences and see if anything changes after a while.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
SOLVED! It seems that PM 27.9.4+ (Maybe an even earlier revision as I didnt keep track of my original version installed) does not play nicely with Nvidia Geforce 430.86! I'm not sure what the update changed with the drivers, but reverting back to 398.82 seemed to fix it all!
@Moonchild, where do you see graphics failures? Just curious so I can look into them.

Re: PaleMoon 28.6 Laggy and Buggy
bigkahuna360, I also have that video card driver. I'm still on Pale Moon v28.5.2. and haven't had any trouble here or with previous Pale Moon versions. It's pretty clear you're saying if I update Pale Moon I'll start having problems because of that driver. Is it the driver's responsibility to be compatible with Pale Moon or vice versa? Anybody here knowledgeable enough about these things to know what the incompatibility might be? Thanks.
EDIT: If the driver is the problem, how does the manufacturer get notified, and would it likely be amenable to fixing the thing, especially for a non-mainstream browser?
