select and dragging a block of text freezes and hangs palemoon on linux

Unread post by 99HVYSK » 2019-06-12, 07:25

the issue is reproducible on any text block, just take example of https://lipsum.com/. select single word, drag the selected word it behaves as it should, but if I select a block of text, dragging will hang palemoon or even the whole system, press ESC and after X seconds to bring everything back to normal. tried to turn on/off hardware acceleration and in safe-mode, issue persists. basilisk does not have this issue.

I can't reproduce this in the current PM and Windows 7.

Out of curiosity. Try portable PM and see if the issue persists.

I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.5.2 runnning in 64 bit linux Mint 19.1 (Tessa) Xfce. I might be missing something in your comment above, but where are you dragging this block of text to on that site?

This is most likely a problem with your DE or WM. Dragged text is "ghosted" (semi-transparent) which might choke up your desktop compositor.
Did you know that moral outrage triggers the pleasure centers of the brain? It's unlikely you can actually get addicted to outrage, but there is plausible evidence that you can become strongly predisposed to it.

with left mouse button pressed, and lift the selected text a little bit will trigger this issue.

Keep in mind when I first said I am using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.5.2 running in 64 bit linux Mint 19.1 (Tessa) Xfce.

Once on the site again, if I left click a block of text, nothing happens. If I left click a second time on a single word, the word is highlighted. If I left click a third time, the whole block of text is highlighted and if I left click a fourth time and keep the left button pressed down, the whole block of text is lifted without it hanging Pale Moon.

You're using Arch Linux so this may or may not work if you try it.

I selected and dragged a block of text in the linked site and Pale Moon slowed down a bit.
Pale Moon on Gentoo Linux (deu's ebuild recipe), window manager is EXWM without compositing.
Seems to happen in any website though: if the selected text is over a certain size, the dragging becomes sluggish (though the rest of the system is fine and the mouse moved at the usual speed, in my case.)

I had just installed xfce4 to test, it is indeed has no such issue. thx for helping me to narrow down the issue.

this is indeed an issue with dwm i'm using, but i am still curious, why it is only happened with palemoon, all other browsers work as expected.

There are known issues with some theme engines in gtk2 when it comes to Mozilla-style applications. So much so that some engines use specific (hard-coded) binary name lists to employ workarounds -- if Pale Moon is not on that exception list/workaround list, it will be affected by these known issues.

I had tested several gtk2 themes based on different engines, all the same.

another question, what the window manager should or could do to overcome issue like this? same theme engine, with dwm it does not work, in xfce4 works.
