Newby to Pale Moon from Waterfox. Basic q's

Unread post by ozstar » 2019-03-12, 22:43

Hi,

I had not heard of PM before today when Chuck at Febe said he now only supports it. So, here I go on yet another journey following the moon this time.

Got to WH near a couple of years ago because of FitefTP, so hopefully it will be among the addons still with PM.

I have downloaded and will set it up but have a few basic nooby q's.

Can I easily get all my current WF data (History, Bookmarks, Pwds etc) into PM?

Can I run both on the same box until I choose?

Can I Sync with PM on other boxes ?

Can I Sync with FF, WF versions ?

That's about it at the moment.

Looks good and quite excited to give it a whirl.

I'll be back as Gen Macarthur said, then again, most you you will be too young to remember! Not this old codger tho'.

cheers

oz :D

Not easily. Waterfox is using a Firefox base that has a bunch of changes to profile storage that aren't compatible with us, so you'll have to export them in WF and import them in PM.
Exporting bookmarks should be easy, and can be done from within the bookmarks manager.
History can't be transferred, sorry.
Passwords can be exported/imported with an extension.
ozstar wrote:Can I run both on the same box until I choose?
Yes, Pale Moon is fully independent.
ozstar wrote:Can I Sync with PM on other boxes ?
Yes, using Pale Moon Sync
ozstar wrote:Can I Sync with FF, WF versions ?
No. Pale Moon uses the (more secure) Weave/Sync 1.1 synchronization method, which is not compatible with Firefox Accounts/Sync.

Many thanks for the help. Have started to set it up now with the exts, so will get all the rest over from WF.

Many thanks again for the help.

I now have the pwds and bookmarks from my WF 56.2.7.1. (64).

I still need to connect with TB 60.5.3. (32) for my send to mail and so far cannot see how to do this.

Also Session Manager would be great.

oz

EDIT:

Using FF Session Manager now and Pale Moon Profile Backup Tool

Association of the mailto: protocol should be handled by your system. But you can check and set the client side of it in Pale Moon from Preferences -> Applications, and looking up "mailto" in the list on the left.

Hi,

Yes that's what I thought but there is nothing about mailto: there.

The only things showing and even through the search option is, Podcast, shockwave Flash, Video Podcast and Web Feed.

How can I get it there please ?

if mailto isn't shown in that list then TB didn't register it properly when installed. Did you use the normal installer for TB on that system or did you use a portable/zip of it instead?

Hmm.. well it should have registered the mailto protocol from the installer in that case. Strange if it did not.

I will try and reinstall to see if it changes.

EDIT: Did a reinstall but it still didn't appear in Prefs.

Any ideas?

Well I finally got it!

I checked in with TB Support who are always extremely helpful, and this is what they said..

'The registry setting would be appropriate only if the user chose to set Thunderbird as the default email client upon installation'

So I went and checked and was surprised to see that somehow during a Win 10 update maybe from 1803 to 1809 it M$ made its own 'Mail' the default client.

Never trust M$ !

Changed it back so TB was default and whammo, PM worked with it beautifully.

So, looks like my move from Firefox to Waterfox then here to PM is near complete.

My needs were restricted to FireShot, FireFTP, Session Manager, TB as email client, FEBE, Color my tabs, Password Backup, Download Status bar and Sync.

Once again many thanks for the help.

Thanks a million for that link; I've installed nine of my favorite old extensions from the archive, and they're all working perfectly in PM 28.4.0!
