Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Hello,
Since I updated Palemoon to version 28.3 (64) I have suffered intermittent shut downs.
I am not a 'techie' but will try to explain;
I am using the site "https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/" which is a local newspaper website.
When I select a section to read, I.e. 'right click'-'open in another tab' the page opens normally then seems to freeze, then Palemoon shuts down of it's own accord.
As I have said this is intermittent - doesn't happen every time but is quite frequent.
It does happen on other sites, but this one is the one I use most.
When I start Palemoon again, it remembers the site I have been on, (session restore) but the main page not the page that had the shut down - if that helps.
If there is anything I can send - please ask.
Appreciate your views.
Thanks.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Tested two links on the site. On the first link it did not crash; no video in the link. On the second link it did crash; there was a video in this link. So I suspect it has something to do with the video (player).
EDIT
Now it's crashing on non-video pages, so it's not (just) the videos causing the problem.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Many thanks for your assistance in checking it out.
I would ask where do we go from here?
I assume, from your edit, that it would be Palemoon at fault?
As I previously mentioned it does it on other sites, but this site was the most prolific.
Thanks again - well appreciated.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
You'll be asked to post a crash report (and maybe also a crashdump). I think you need a 3rd-party app for this, something like either "AppCrashView" or "WhatIsHang." Probably the first one since it's a crash.
EDIT
Nigaikaze beat me to it. I'm a slow typer.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Please use the "hide" option . . . scrolling through all that text makes my wrist hurt. Also, you will really need to post back a crash report.
EDIT
I see that you tried but somehow the text was put before the hide tags instead of inside them. Can we get a moderator to fix it please?

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
On a lark, I disabled (set to 'false') dom.IntersectionObserver.enabled, & that stopped the crash on my end.
(Good golly, what a pig that site is.)
#1, Original profile, a few days old, with whatever done to it...
#2, New, clean profile, set Flash to Ask, & set the Menu bar to display.
Crashed with dom.IntersectionObserver.enabled;True.
No crash with dom.IntersectionObserver.enabled;False.

... so hopefully the next point release will resolve this. (EDIT: And it looks like it's already in the latest unstable release.)

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
The work done on the intersectionobservers feature past 28.3.0 (and in the unstable channel) wasn't crash fixing, so likely it's something else that still needs to be found/addressed. Still, checking if the unstable version still exhibits the problem would help confirm this

Unstable (Portable), latest version, also crashes.
Basilisk doesn't crash.
Firefox 60 ESR doesn't crash.

Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. Comodo Internet security or Comodo Firewall + Avira Anivirus.
Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
I've been unable to reproduce this crash on https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/ so far. Of course the one person where a crash would help because I can slap it in the debugger doesn't work.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Hi,
I note there is mention of "dom.intersectionobservers" in the threads above.
I have checked "about:config" on my copy of Palemoon (28.3.0(64)) but can find no reference to it at all.
Q1: Should it be there?
Q2: Should the last update have put it there?
Q3: How do I put it in? (Please bear in mind I'm no techie)
It may be that this missing piece is the cause of the intermittent shut downs. (Pure conjecture on my part)
Appreciate your views and advice

Q2 = yes
It's there. You must search for "dom.intersectionobserver"!
Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Gepus - many thanks I have now found it.
All items are listed in alphabetical (within alphabetical) order except dom.intersectionobserver
Mine is between "devtools.webide.zoom" and "dom.allow_scripts_to_close_windows" - strange.
But I thank you nevertheless, I would not have found it.
Thanks again.

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
That's because for some reason, someone didn't follow the normal rule to use lower caps on the first term of camel-casing. So it has a capital "I" on "IntersectionObserver" which gets sorted "the Linux way" which alphabetizes capital letters before small caps.dustyv wrote:All items are listed in alphabetical (within alphabetical) order except dom.intersectionobserver

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Just tried the Plymouthherald site with current unstable version-2019-01-19 (Win 7 x86), and it looked like this crash is fixed.
Kept the site open around 30 minutes with 6-8 articles open, with videos playing repeatedly, and all was well.
(dom.IntersectionObserver.enabled set to true, per unstable's default)

Re: Palemoon - intermittent shut down
Hi,
I too have just completed running on that site having changed the "dom.IntersectionObserver.enabled set to False".
with Palemoon 28.3.0 (64)
No crashes.
As I had originated the thread, may I thank everybody that assisted.
It has been a steep learning curve for me, with a lot to try and understand.
I take my hat off to you guys - you certainly know your stuff.
Again my profound thanks.
