Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
I see rather more opportunity for error in backing up/restoring Windows, than in backing up/restoring a single folder.
Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
billmcct, you must have the world's largest hard drive. My creates take at most 30 minutes, and the restores even less time (using the Windows process). Using Macrium Reflect, even less.billmcct wrote:I agree with most of that. BUT.van p wrote:It's quick, simple, and a good thing to do on a regular basis; it has saved me many times.
That's all I'm sayin'.
Quick? Takes 4 hours on my system.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
I just ordered a USB 3/0/2.0 2 TB external HD. I will purchase and download the Easeus home backup/restore for $29. Once I know I have this backstop in place and working properly, I will try the various options available to me for moving to 28.
1. I will backup what I need to on the external drive. I will copy my P M profile once I can determine the exact file name to find. I will store/park it someplace safe.
2. I will try using the normal P M update function and see how that goes. If that screws things up beyond my ability to remedy,
3. I will delete everything Pale Moon from my box and try doing a clean install and then copy the saved profile to that. If that still has things screwed up beyond my ability to remedy,
4. I will restore my original P M 27 via the backup/restore system. Then I will come back here with the details about the above attempts and ask for advice how to fix things.
When I searched my system for Tobin's suggested %appdata%\Moonchild Productions I got about 90 things back. Only looking at the various folders i could not determine which to save. The one that looked to be the best choice said it had last been modified in 2017. That did not seem right as I have updated two extensions in the past few months and for sure have made minor tweeks to a preference or setting more than likely. So I was lost. Like I keep saying, I am basically digitally illiterate.
Sometimes I wish I did not care so much about my privacy. If I did not, i would be using Windows 10 and Chrome.

Help: Troubleshooting Information: profile folder...click on Profile Folder. Now you're in your profile folder that you are using right now, go back one page or click profiles and save.
Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
You need to grab the top level Pale Moon directory under %appdata%\Moonchild Productions so you get ALL profiles and the profile configuration ini file.. This is why my instructions said exactly that.. But since no one can follow simple instructions and insist on freaking the hell out and piling more and more over complicated or conflicting details on top of a simple file operation.. I will leave you all to continue spinning your wheels in utter ignorance and stupidity.
Good day.
Good day.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
Because the former will take a few minutes (or less) while the latter can take an hour (or more) and is not as simple or fail-safe as you might think (and you risk messing your entire Windows installation if you don't know what you are doing).TwoTankAmin wrote:Why is saving my profile and doing all sorts of other stuff to insure i keep the bookmarks, preferences, extensions, add-ons etc. so I can get back to what I have a better idea than getting a Windows backup/restore program, saving it all that way and if the next steps fail for some reason, I just do a restore from there? Seems so much simpler.
It is not a file that you have to backup, it is a folder. You don't have to "search" for what Tobin suggested, you have to go there. It is a folder, and here's how to do it: Press Win+R ("Win" is the Windows key). A small "Run" window should appear and you must paste %appdata%\Moonchild Productions in there. Pressing OK will take you to the folder in question. Alternatively, you can do what rabnbeinn suggested but that will take you inside the Profile, which may be confusing so stick with Tobin's method.TwoTankAmin wrote:1. Note that if you do clean install and then copy your saved profile to that, it won't be a clean install any more. If there are issues in your saved profile, you will be restoring those as well. A clean install implies that you will start installing new extensions yourself for example (one after the other).TwoTankAmin wrote:3. You post here asking how to do something.TwoTankAmin wrote:4. I will restore my original P M 27 via the backup/restore system. Then I will come back here with the details about the above attempts and ask for advice how to fix things.
Several people tell you the easy way.
You ignore them cos you know best, and want to do it the difficult way that costs $30.
And then you state that you will post here for support if and when you screw things up.
Honestly - you could not make this stuff up.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
better use that $30 to pay someone to make an instructional video on how to backup and restore your profile (which takes all of 10 seconds) instead of buying a complicated software you have no idea how to use and will definitely wreck your entire computer if you screw up. OR you can just follow our simple free advice and donate that $30 to our wonderful devs
i mean it's as easy as going here and copying your profile folder to somewhere else, then putting it back if you need

You will find appdata here,

in "Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab.
You can find the profile here,

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
As mentioned earlier (see quote below), instructing to backup the xxxxxxxx.default folder can cause problems. You need the profile configuration ini file which is not included in the xxxxxxxx.default folder.
So, the folder to backup/restore is "Pale Moon" (as indicated in the quote below). User only needs to be careful to restore it in the exact location it was before.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
Someone PLEASE make a screen recording of navigating to the correct folder, copying "Pale Moon", and pasting it on a different drive or USB stick and let that be the final answer to all this drivel? It's starting to become a real elephant.
Alternatively, use the backup tool I created if copying a folder is too complicated and you need a preset GUI to understand things.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
we've tried our hardest to spoon feed and hold your hand while teaching you how to copy and paste a folder in windows. you can't even manage that yet you think an image backup is the way to go? i and others here *could* make an instructional video but somehow you'll probably still have trouble following along. also your attitude doesn't warrant such help, people in this thread have already went above and beyond reasonable expectation to try and help out someone as clueless as you. advice that you casually toss down the drain of course
good luck with your data and browser update

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
I did go the extra mile for users who are not comfortable poking around in the application data area of the Windows system drive for a reason.
But I guess it's not appreciated and people would rather make 35 heated posts on a forum with no solution that is accepted as "good enough" even if several are, instead.
So, please put away your popcorn and tell me: Should I remove all of these extra tools I spent time designing and creating related to the use of Pale Moon to make one's life easier? Because they surely don't seem to be even considered and summarily ignored as an option (how do you think that makes me feel, by the way? I guess the term is "unappreciated")

You are most certainly NOT unappreciated MC. I'm not a tech head, so I can tell you that I for one appreciate everything yourself and everyone else does on this forum.

Re: Qs re movng from ver 27 to 28
I've never used the Profile Backup tool that's why I forgot to mention it. Nothing to do with appreciation. I prefer to copy the folders myself but for some users (including TwoTankAmin) it indeed would've been the best option. If only he'd have searched through the home page a bit more... hope he sorts it out.

I myself use that very tool and do appreciate it a lot. But as I saidMoonchild wrote:

earlier, he blocked me from replying to him on the last help attempt because
he apparently did not like my reply.
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=20234&p=150927#p150743
So, as I said, I sat this one out.
The reason for the Popcorn comment is because after many many attempts
to help him and going well out of my way in the past. He still found reasons to not do
any of it down to the point of making it out like he didn't know what a power button was!
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=14356&hilit=power+button#p102852
So I gave up any hope in being able to help him as he seems to always find a reason to not
do anything.
