If you've already tried all that, then you have exhausted all normal troubleshooting options. This makes it difficult to go any further or suggest anything without a lot more detail. Please describe in what way they do not work. Please include troubleshooting information from the browser (see sticky post) and any othe information about your operating system and environment tht might be influencing the browser, like security software or antivirus. Also, since you hav tried older versions, how far back have you tried, and are versions displaying this problem now while they were ok before or are you a new user of Pale Moon?

tried versions back to 26.0, problem still persisted. the forward and back buttons are greyed out and show no history and unable to move back and forth after visiting multiple sites. running win 7 avast antivirus--nothing in environment has changed whatsoever. seems to have started when i did the latest PM upgrade, but am not sure problem started then. Problem has been evident for approximately two weeks. Thank you.

Have you tried temporarily disabling all of the Avast Shields?

Make a test with the Portable version.
Download, extract to a folder of your choice (not to a system folder!).
Don't touch any setting and test with this clean install if the buttons are working.
In case they still don't - check if your Portable recognized any plugin. If so, deactivate them in the browser, restart Pale Moon and see if the problem still persists.

The portable version's forward and back buttons worked just fine.....should I do a clean reinstall of PM on my pc?

Sounds like a good idea - especially since you said a new profile continued to display the problem. Annoying, of course, but it seems something went really wrong somewhere (potential AV interference during upgrade or what not).

I suggest you completely remove and reinstall and keep your AV disabled during that process. Then rebuild your profile from a fresh start.
