PM 28.10 Still cannot open external links in same page/tab
Starting with PM 28.0 I have been unable to open external links in the same page/tab. I still can't in 28.10. Will this be fixed in a future release?

Test page(s) and steps needed to verify this would help a lot.
Can you drag the external link and drop it onto the current tab and open it successfully that way?

Preferences > Tabs > Open links that open in a new window in: is (still) set to > Current Tab and not replaced by an add-on?
Just asking, because ppl reported settings changes with updates.

OK, one person reported settings changes (which, in the end, were not caused by updates)

Where do they open?
What is your (about:config) setting for, browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external?
If you change that to '1', is there any change in behavior?

Re: PM 28.10 Still cannot open external links in same page/tab
My setting for has for years been 1, which through PM 27.9.4 opened external links in the same tab. Since 28.00 it opens external links in a new window.therube wrote:Where do they open?

These are the results I get in PM 28.x for the different values of browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external when PM is already running and I click on an external link:
1. Opens in new window (should open in same tab)
2. Opens in new window (should open in new window)
3. Opens in new tab in current window (should open in new tab.)
-1. Uses the settings from browser.link.open_newwindow, but gets the same results as the explicit settings of 1, 2, and 3 listed above (1. new window. 2. new window. 3. new tab.)

External links are defined as "links opened from a different application", such as clicking on a link in an email. Dragging and dropping a link does not actually meet that definition, because OS is being used to directly transfer the URL, but I tried drag and drop just to see what would happen. Can you drag the external link and drop it onto the current tab and open it successfully that way?
Dragging an external link to a PAGE opens the link in a new tab no matter what the about:config settings are.
Dragging an external link to a TAB opens the link in the same tab no matter what the about:config settings are.
No need for test pages. All you need to do to reproduce is set browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external to 1 (or set browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external to -1 AND set browser.link.open_newwindow to 1), and then, while PM is running, click on a link in an external application (an email client like Thunderbird, a text editor that recognizes links, an office program like Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, or Open Office, etc.) or click on an html document.Test page(s) and steps needed to verify this would help a lot.

I still don't know if Moonchild or anyone on his team are even aware of this bug. And I don't know if there are any plans to fix it.

I'd like to know if the same issue happens with Basilisk or not. If it doesn't then there's a front-end issue. If it does, it'll be toolkit.

Re: PM 28.10 Still cannot open external links in same page/tab
I had hoped that somebody who already has Basilisk installed would have tested this, as it would have been trivial for them. After a week of silence from all Basilisk users I bit the bullet, downloaded and installed Basilisk 2018.09.27, made it my default browser for the duration of my testing so that it would be the target for external links, and tested all the combinations and permutations of browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external and browser.link.open_newwindow.Moonchild wrote:I'd like to know if the same issue happens with Basilisk or not. In Basilisk everything works as documented, so I guess that makes it a front-end issue.
