Palemoon update removed my saved login credentials

Unread post by generic user » 2018-09-21, 07:54

I went to "About" and clicked "Check for updates". My saved logins and passwords are gone. My bookmarks and addons remained.

My logins.json file seems to still have the correct information in it. It was not blank. There are over a hundred entries in it and the entries are like this:

Code: Select all

[{"id":1,"hostname":"http://www.reddit.com","httpRealm":null,"formSubmitURL":"https://ssl.reddit.com","usernameField":"user","passwordField":"passwd","encryptedUsername":"M{snip}WOoO","encryptedPassword":"M{snip}C6","guid":"{7c4{snip}e5}","encType":1,"timeCreated":1520064718524,"timeLastUsed":1520064718524,"timePasswordChanged":1520064718524,"timesUsed":1},
I went to viewtopic.php?f=24&t=13804 and followed this advice:

Code: Select all

Type "about:config" in the address bar and press enter
Find the preference "signon.importedFromSqlite", right-click it, and choose "Reset"
Click on Pale Moon > Help > Troubleshooting Information > (Under profile) Show Folder
This opens an explorer/file manager window in your profile folder
Close Pale Moon (Important!) -- keep the explorer/file manager window open
~~Delete "logins.json"~~ RENAMED IT! (delete is terrible advice!)
Restart Pale Moon. It will now create a new .json file with logins from the previous (sqlite) format.
Passwords still missing. Help? I believe it should be possible to recover them at least to export.

OS= Win7.
Old palemoon= 27.5? (ish. Not certain. Could have been 26.5)
current: 28.0.1 64bit

No responses... :-( What about this instead:

How do I revert to version 27.8.0? (That was definitely the version I was using, not the others mentioned.) From there I can export my passwords and other data before upgrades.

Restore your logins.json file and follow this advice.

This isn't a real-time communication medium. Please have a little patience.

My saved logins and passwords are gone.
How did you determine that?
Did you check in Password Manager (Saved Logins)?

If they show up there, then what JustOff posted is likely the issue.

That {Preferrences-->Security-->Saved Passwords} was the very first thing I checked. They were not there. That "Saved Logins" list was blank.

That appears to be directions to "Tick the box" for {Preferences-->Security-->Automatically fill in log-in details}. Which is to save future passwords. That is not my issue. That works as expected. My issue is for a past database. My existing saved login/password list did not correctly enter the "Saved Logins" list on update. I would say it was lost, except that is not correct. It still exists. It is not in a format I can read. (Though logins.json was emptied and reset when I followed the troubleshooting steps in order to recover it. I made a backup of my profile before following those steps and still retain a filled logins.json.)

If you still have a functional backup of PM 27.9.4 try Password Exporter 1.2.1.1-signed to export passwords into XLM or CSV and then import into PM 28.1.0. I had a similar problem with the official procedure to convert signons.sqlite to logins.json when migrating from 26 to 27 two years ago and I believe JustOff recommended it as a last resort. It worked successfully on 99% of 200+ PWs.

Palemoon update
What did you update from?
What OS?

(... there was something on the Firefox end, passwords in general ...
Was it this, Firefox 32.0 - Saved Passwords Aren't Showing?
Yes, old, but...)
(... there was something on the SeaMonkey end, Mac OS, specifically ...)
