webM and Video Playback Not Working

Unread post by bogdanz » 2018-07-22, 02:32

Hi there,

I have been dealing with this issue for quite some time and I get the error on all videos including YouTube HTML5. I have already checked out the instructions here https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=17704 and here https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=216#p771 but I neither have those apps (HEVCVideoExtension & MPEG2VideoExtension are NOT installed) nor did the problem get resolved with a fresh profile.

As such, I am hoping to find some help.

Thanks in advance!

Here is my config:

Operating system: Windows 10 17692
Browser version: 27.9.4

Can't reproduce on Windows 7 x86 (Pale Moon 27.9.4)
I can watch videos fine on all three sites and don't get any of these problems.

Since you didn't post links to any specific videos that give you trouble, I picked some at random.
Can you play them?
Have you tried with the beta? You can download a portable version just to test.

^ all the videos posted above work for me too and on Pale Moon (beta) v28.0.0b4 btw -- BUT we are on Windows 7 -- the OP is on Windows 10 17692 which may be a factor, especially on PM 27.9.4 as is the case with the OP (which is why I didn't reply since I am on Win7 ;))....

I'm curious if anyone using Win10 that is also using the beta Pale Moon release can test these same videos linked above?

On the stable, YouTube link is stuck on 360p.
Dailymotion link shows me a blank black box where the vid is supposed to be.
The Vimeo link says "Unsupported viewing environment."

Testing beta now.

64bit Portable - everything works as well

Testing Beta non-portable..

Everything works great! Wow - thank you very much.

^ Good to know  -- I've been wondering if PM28 is going to address these video issues on Win10 (that has been plaguing v27)....

That's great to hear. Thank you for your tireless work on this project, I'd be lost without it. There's just no alternative browser that is free, fair, apolitical, and that will not exploit me.

P.S. I wanted to ask what VP9 is. I have never seen it supported before on PM, but in the beta it is checked off: https://youtube.com/html5.

VP9 is a codec used by WebM

VP9 has been supported by Pale Moon for a long time already -- BUT MSE for WebM has been incomplete and disabled as a result by default, opting for h.264/MP4 formats.

On the stable, YouTube link is stuck on 360p.
Dailymotion link shows me a blank black box where the vid is supposed to be.
The Vimeo link says "Unsupported viewing environment.
чегомля..?! All this three links plays video and has no problem in PM 27.9.4 x86 (youtube offers video up to 1080p)

Running Win10 and Pale Moon 27.9.4 x64 and get same non-playing video results as bogdanz, but it looks like it won't be long before they play fine. :)

@TechnoLurker, Win10 aside (I can't test that), all the videos should work in PM 27.

If on you end they are not, test in a new, clean Profile & see if they work there?

therube: Win10, especially the latest incarnation on the release ring, has issues with Pale Moon 27 because of the codecs installed that "take over" WMF playback but aren't compatible, and as a result restrict video playback.
This is a Pale Moon <-> Win10 specific interop issue

That's a shame, since VP9 is open codec unlike the patent-encumbered H264. Any plans to address the MSE & VP9 thing at all? With VP9 you don't even need "system" codecs since it's bundled with PM right?

Actually, VP9 is also encumbered, but Google has allowed it to be used in an open fashion. As a developer you're given a "grant" to use it. This was actually a problem initially because libvpx (the reference implementation) initially didn't grant VP9 use, only VP8, which was a blocker for updates until (based on my report) Google updated their legal text to extend this grant to all WebM codec technologies. But make no mistake about the encumbrance of VPx.

h.264 isn't a problem for Pale Moon because we off-load this to the Windows Media Foundation. Meaning it's not our code and we're not bundling the patented decoder. The downside is that you can run into interop issues like this.

Damn that sucks, wasn't aware of that. Sigh.

Yeah, that's exactly the kind of problem that a true open codec can easily solve. I think if it's part of PM, it makes it much more portable and will just work regardless of (most) system configurations or "overrides" (or whatever other issue), but of course I'm aware there's no way to do it with h264.

Does Firefox have MSE & VP9? If so, isn't it possible to leverage their code, or Google made a specific deal/grant with Mozilla only for their patents? If they don't then nevermind... just ranting sorry.
