redirects ???

Unread post by faithbuilders » 2018-06-14, 13:21

Is there a way to prevent redirects in PM? FF had a addon years ago, but I can't seem to find anything now a days.

Why would you want to prevent redirects? (I'm assuming you mean 301 or 302 responses)

about:config, accessibility.blockautorefresh

Or NoScript has the ability to block <META> redirects inside <NOSCRIPT> elements.

Both depend on the particular type of redirect
& both by blocking may also block a redirect that you may in fact want

No, I mean you clink on a link and it "redirects" you to a completely different website. That is very annoying. Sometimes I have to click the link 7 x b4 it goes to where is should.

Uh, that sounds like you have a piece of malware on your system, hijacking links when clicked.

It could be that the redirects are ads, certain torrents sites use this method if their donation fund dries up. It happens on a site I frequent, but the ads are stopped when the funds build up again. Saying that though, 7 clicks is a tad much.

Various links on various site do "redirect", i.e. purposely open unexpected sites - for monetary purposes (as noted above).

Depending on how the "redirect" is performed, there may or may not be much of anything you can do about it.

Might try the remove redirects bookmarklet.

It can work on something like: http://example.com/redir.cgi?to=http://example.net/.

Other sites may only have something like: http://example.com/40sgreatesthits.php, & with something like that, it is the "back end" that determines what actually gets opened.

You might (as a teaser) actually get the wanted "40sgreatesthits", the first time.
But then it might redirect to any arbitrary site (that pays example.com for the click).
Don't know how to thwart that?

Thanks for your help. The best I've found is the "Killjasmin" addon. Then always click on link using middle mouse button that opens link in separate tab, if it redirects, the tab will just shut down and I click the link again.

So yet again, still didn't understand what you were looking for.

P.U.K a rude PopUp/Under Killer(prev: killjasmin)

Sounds interesting.

A down & dirty method that is helpful, is to clear the values of this Pref, dom.popup_allowed_events.

Problem there is it may be overly broad, blocking actual popups that you do want to see.
Usually you're notified though - by a popup ;-), allowing you to allow the wanted popup.

As usual on the internet, redirects were ment as a feature but is now abused to redirect people to porn sites ect. As far as I can see, there are several methodes to do this. One is the overlay, which will open a site when you click first time anywhere on the site. The overlay can be removed with JustOff's "Dismiss the overlay".
The other methodes differ in how the work (seen from me as the user), and I haven't found any tools that can prevent it without also cripple the wanted redirects.
The most nasty one I have had, was when I tried to download a file from Uploaded.net. I was redirected to a page that opened in a new tab, and this tab opened a new tab, and so on. The tabs opened so fast I couldn't close them fast enough. I had to terminate Pale Moon to stop the madness.
The callous people behind this unintelligent saleswork really should have their school money back. I can't imagine anyone buying anything from sites they were tricked into.

Says it only works with Firefox.

That's simply AMO being, er, AMO.
(Yes that is not what I wanted to say.)

When was the last time AMO "promoted" anything for PM?

Anyhow, you can get the extension, it does run in PM.
Seems very basic.

What happens is, if you try to open a "forbidden" site, it closes the window (if there are no other tabs open in the window) or tab.
It does not pro-actively block any sites.
The site does start to load, the extension sees it, & then closes it.
So there is some period of time that the site "exists", even if small.
Likewise, it does nothing to prevent "bad things" from happening, during that time frame.
"Bad" might be displaying something naughty, or I suppose "bad" could also mean initiating some sort of download or other action like opening some other (non-blocked) web page.

It's kind of like if you expected that at some point in time, randomly, some "bad site" would pop out on you, & because of that, you kept your trigger finger ready, & once you saw that site pop up, you fired your mouse on the close button, knocking that page into oblivion.

Note that when this extension closes a tab, it does not drop you back to any prior page in history for that tab, the tab & its' history are simply gone.

So if you open this topic, then reply to it, then edit it, then type a "bad url" into the location bar, "bad url" starts to open, the extension sees that & then kills this tab. Meaning "bad url" & with it the ability to go back (in tab history) to this topic.

Sample "bad URL" (NSFW): https://www . livejasmin.com/en/girls/

You can download (or install, I suppose?) the extension from this URL, https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/down ... 2.4-fx.xpi.

(AMO makes it a PITA for "foreign" browsers to interact with its website. Disabling JavaScript may help to thwart their arrogance.)

Sounds interesting.
But in actuality ends up being less that what (at least) I would have thought.

(That's one of the sites that by default is "blocked" [closed] by the extension. So if you load the extension, then try to load that site, it will give you a feel for what/how the extension works.)

Yes, I have Killjasmin, and it does all the above stuff you mentioned. I think I'll just stick with KJ. It is simple to use, just copy and past first part of URL separated by commas. Thanks any way.
