Can't Load www.kroger.com

Unread post by van p » 2018-04-01, 16:03

Kroger is a grocery store chain in the U.S. When I try to go to https://www.kroger.com, I get the below screen. The Reference # changes every time. Notice the URL starts with "https", but the message says "http"; don't know if this is relevant (problem occurs either way). I can get to it in 3 other browsers. I have no serious addons, etc., and no security stuff that would be blocking this.

That's a typical problem, when you aren't using Firefox Compatibility mode.
I tried changing to both Native and Gecko mode, to reproduce that message..
As a result I got redirected to this page:
https://www.kroger.com/unsupported
After clicking on the "Continue without upgrading" button, I got redirected back to the main page.
I'm not able to reproduce any such message at the top of the page, no matter what I do.

How about testing in an alternate fresh profile? I tried both https://www.kroger.com/ and http://www.kroger.com/ -- works in either case (of course the "http:" URL redirects to the "https:" URL as expected).

I can get into the site after disabling ublock origin, but there are no images available only sentences. There is movement across the screen indicating that an image is hidden.
Looks very confusing.

OK, I've been able to reproduce the issue now..
This is what I did:
1) Disabled the uBlock Origin extension.
2) Restarted Pale Moon (clearing all cache).
3) Opened kroger.com (the page didn't load properly, throwing some kind of a Twitter analytics error in the console).
4) Refreshed the page..
This resulted in a Access Denied message (like shown in the first post), with this error in the console:
The character encoding of the HTML document was not declared.
The document will render with garbled text in some browser configurations if the document contains characters from outside the US-ASCII range.
The character encoding of the page must be declared in the document or in the transfer protocol.1 www.kroger.com

I don't get it.
I've whitelisted everyting on that page, and turned off all privacy functions in uBO, but I'm still unable to trigger the error.
Only when disabling uBO completely, and emptying my cache (like described in my previous post), am I able to reproduce the issue.

Page continues to work fine for me per my initial post (using "Firefox Compatibility" mode) but would probably break if I simply cleared cache....

Thanks for all the replies so far.

The "normal" screens shown by Moonraker and badnick are what you're supposed to see.

For the original problem I was in F/F Compat. mode. Native mode gets me the "upgrade" screen shown by Moonraker. Gecko Compat. mode shows me the screen properly.

Hopefully a fresh profile isn't the issue here; never done that and don't want to start now.

I can communicate with the Kroger people. Is there something I can tell them about this that they can change (UA or whatever)?

Thanks again.

EDIT: Previously, when I had the problem, I created a generic Kroger bookmark with the address for the site. Clicking on it produced the message originally shown. In Gecko mode, I re-created the bookmark, and it worked. I then switched back to F/F Compat. mode, and the bookmark worked, and still does. Apparently the problem has been fixed by accident. Still, there was a problem, and it would be nice if it was fixed systemically. I'll still contact Kroger if somebody can tell me what to say to them. Thanks.

This was the same issue as here. A UA overrided fixed the problem there. The issue may reappear once you clear your cookies I'm thinking. If that happens, try the override (with higher numbers).

You could first simply try clearing cache ---- In Pale Moon; Go to "Preferences" > "Advanced" > "Network" tab > in the "Cached Web Content" section press the "Clear Now" button (you will soon see "... using 0 bytes of disk space" displayed near the button).

Test the https://www.kroger.com/ page (using F/F Compat. mode).

If this doesn't help you can try setting a UA Override for the website (as suggested above which should help) but please post your OS info because the setting depends upon what this is..... i.e. if your using Windows 7 (64-bit) then the following UA Override should work: general.useragent.override.kroger.com set to Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0 (Pale Moon).

Steps adding UA Override for Windows7 64-bit (if clearing Cache didn't help):
1) enter about:config in address bar
2) right-click anywhere in settings and do the following:
add useragent override.png
3) enter the Preference Name (copy this string and paste) general.useragent.override.kroger.com in prompt (replace "wm" with "kroger")
add useragent override step 2.png
4) Enter Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0 (Pale Moon) (copy/paste) into last ("Enter String Value") prompt
add useragent override step 3.png
Steps w/o screen-shots:
1) Type "about:config" (without quotes) into the Pale Moon browser URL address bar and press return.
2) Press the "I promise to be careful!" Button to access Preferences.
3) Right-Click anywhere you see preference settings and from the context menu select "New" > "String".
4) Enter "general.useragent.override.XXXXXXX.XXX" (without quotes) as the "preference name" (New String value).
5) Press "OK"
6) Enter "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0 (Pale Moon)" (without quotes) as the "String Value".
7) Press "OK"

******* BE SURE AND CHANGE THE SETTINGS IN STEP 4 AND STEP 6 (in RED) TO CORRESPOND TO WHAT THEY SHOULD BE (step 6 according to OS - Note: example above Win7 64-bit))!!!!!!!!

I'm including detailed steps because you had mentioned you were not familiar with creating an alternate fresh profile so perhaps you may not be familiar with creating a new UA Override pref....
