Is there a way to sync Fx and PM bookmarks?

Unread post by nana2 » 2011-10-03, 15:11

I prefer PM to Fx but sometimes when bookmarking a site in Fx I'd like to show that bookmark in PM as well and of course in reverse as well. Therefore I've been going back and forth to both browsers by copying and pasting the sites as bookmarks and that's a bit cumbersome. I consider Fx to be a backup of PM and visa versa. LOL

Both browsers are on one machine though and it's Windows XP Home. Read a bit about the sync features but it's not very detailed as it refers mostly to having more than 1 machine and pertaining to the very same browsers?

TIA

I suggest you set up Firefox Sync, available in both browsers! (it's in the Tools menu)

Thank you for the links Moonchild. However, I see that there is no info on how to use Sync for a single machine. Is it possible to set up Sync using a single machine? It tells me to use another device to link to? Perhaps I'm just way too dumb to do this and also am way too old.

You have to consider Pale Moon a "different device" as the documentation assumes you are only using Firefox on one computer. Just a matter of semantics.
  1. Set up Sync on Firefox, following the instructions on the Firefox site I pointed you to. Store your login, password and sync key where you can easily recall them (you will need them in the following steps)
  2. In Pale Moon, go to "Set up sync"
  3. I already have a firefox sync account - click Connect
  4. In "Add a device" click the link at the bottom "I don't have the device with me"
  5. This opens the "Sign in" page. Fill in your login, your password and you Sync key.
  6. If needed, set your sync options with the button in the bottom left, then click Next
  7. Follow the rest of the instructions in the wizard and you're done!

Thank you Moonchild. Now I understand! The "I don't have the device with me" was the proverbial light bulb. :) Before proceeding to sync both browsers I have some questions though.

I have over 800 bookmarks in Fx and PM, virtually all in folders and sub folders. Will sync work with these folders?
Will sync only pick up the new bookmarks as of syncing or overwrite the bookmarks I already have?
Do I have to sign into sync every time I want to sync or does sync do it automatically?
TIA

You are given the option to merge (default) or overwrite one or the other. It includes subfolders, and other things as well like your tabs, history and passwords (if you so choose)
The signing in is only when you set it up, from that point on it goes automatically.

Thank you Moonchild once again. My (hopefully) last question.

What option would you recommend: merge or overwrite? (almost all bookmarks in both Fx and PM are the same at this point)

TIA

I recommend you merge if you want to keep both in sync. that way they truly synchronize, extra ones in PM added to FX and extra ones in FX added to PM. After that, they should follow whatever you decide to reorganize in either.

Thank you Moonchild. Followed the instructions exactly. However, Sync doesn't seem to work. I get numerous errors when setting it up such as Firefox incorrectly configured, wrong sync key, and manage account not showing up in Firefox nor in PM. Tried with 2 different accounts. I did a search in MozillaZine and apparently some have problems with their syncing in Fx version 7. Thank you for trying to help me out, I'm giving up after having tried it so often. insert *banging my head up against the wall* :(

I can't sync either right now... bad timing

I want to suggest X-Marks.

Works on many browsers and you can save between them.

Just a suggestion.
You can also export your bookmarks to an HTML, very simple solution with the Firefox and Palemoon's Bookmark Manager. Also, you can import the exported HTML.

Simple(Alternative to Fox Sync): X-marks
Lengthy: Export and Import

A little warning about X-marks: please make sure to thoroughly read their privacy policy and terms&conditions - they will use your bookmarks, tabs and browsing behavior for profiling. They really don't keep your data private and safe.

Exporting and importing works well, of course. You do this from the "import and backup" button in the Library window (opened through "Show All Bookmarks" in Firefox, and "Organize bookmarks" in Pale Moon)

Oh, I was already aware of x-marks' existence and didn't go for it for the exact reasons Moonchild gave. ;) I'll give this all a rest for a while and see if Sync will work in the future. Thank you.
