Spellchecker not working on Facebook

Unread post by psychonaut25 » 2017-12-11, 01:56

I apologize for coming here with yet another Facebook problem, and I realize this may be on their end and not on Pale Moon's, or that it may be a Firefox problem. My issue is that spellchecker is working globally, in all text input fields across all websites except for Facebook. I did a bit of searching and found this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1093164 however the solutions proposed there did not solve the problem for me. Has anybody else run into this, and does anybody know of a solution? Thanks

Apparently it doesn't appear to be on Pale Moon's end as you surmised as possibly the case:
Spell-checking in FB.png
Seems to be working I think... hmm, but then I didn't even now about the "Advanced" setting "Check my spelling as I type" but now that I do I checked and it was enabled. Nice to know, but then I also didn't know that "dunno" and "yo" were actual words, which made me wonder, so I checked once again I have to conclude that yes all is well in spell-check land since dictionary.com says they are words and as such are not marked as misspelled as I had expected when I typed the words. Conclusion: The Pale Moon (27.6.2) option to spell-check appears to be just fine for me. ;)

So it would appear to be on your end.... :shh:

Hmmm, what is the "Facebook Disconnect" add-on and why do you have two different versions of the "Add to Search Bar" add-on both enabled at the same time?

You have a lot of add-ons, I'd suggest you try running Pale Moon in safe-mode to see if this solves the problem with spell checking in FB....

Something tells me it has to do with my useragent string that I set up a while ago to fix some other issues with Facebook, shortly after Moonchild fixed the infinite reload during theater photo view... I don't recall exactly how I found it, but I do recall it was in a thread that offered several useragent strings which helped to optimize Facebook. I might try messing around with that to see what I can accomplish.

Oh, how strange! I didn't even notice that I had two versions of Add to Search Bar. I guess when it updated, it never removed the old one. I'll get on that right away.
Facebook Disconnect is, according to their website, designed to "Stop Facebook from tracking the webpages you go to."

I'll give safe mode a shot and see what I come up with.

Strange behavior. I disabled all add-ons and tried typing some gibberish into the text field for a status update, but it seems the page hadn't finished loading when I did so. I typed in my gibberish, the red line appeared underneath (everything ok so far), and then the page finished loading and the red line disappeared.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the problem was not one of the add-ons, but is in fact the useragent string I'm using for Facebook. Either that, or it's both.
So, I guess now I'm off to find a better useragent string.

I'm using the default UA Overrides for FB and presumably you are as well but worth a check so here are the defaults below.

Both general.useragent.override.facebook.com and general.useragent.override.fbcdn.net are set to:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:99.9) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.9 (Pale Moon)

You could try testing in a fresh alternate profile, here is a post that explains how to do this: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15405&p=111481#p111481. If this fixes the problem then there is presumably pref setting(s) causing the issue.

Hey, that appeared to work! I was previously using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko for both facebook.com and fbcdn.net, but I think the one you provided seemed to do the trick. Many thanks, Pale Moon Rising!

I must admit, a new problem has arisen since I switched the useragent string. I cannot adjust the slider on Facebook videos anymore. I can play and pause, but that's all. Seems as though my quest for a better useragent string is not over yet.

Perhaps this should be saved for another thread, however.

What "slider" do you mean? I am able to slide the video to any position in the video stream and slide the volume control to any desired level (if these are what you are referring to as a "slider") and this is using the default UA Override previously mentioned (note: the default UA Override can simply be set by a right-click on the setting and selecting "Reset" -- to avoid any typos in the setting).

FWIW, to get the video to actually play I had to set the "Media Mode" to "No HTML5".... (to do this I use the Pale Moon HTML5 Video Tuner add-on).

I was talking about the video progress slider, not the volume slider. But for whatever reason it seems to be working now, as I've since restarted my computer. I guess I should always remember the "try restarting" before other kinds of troubleshooting rule

I'll make sure this is my last post in this thread, if any other issues pop up I'll open a new topic.
