Maybe you are using an extension for youtube that isn't compatible with youtube's new layout. Try disabling your extensions until you find the culprit.

If that doesn't work, go to about:support and paste the contents of "Important Modified Preferences".

You can set Pale Moon to safe-mode to check if an add-on might be interfering with YouTube (Go to "Help" > "Restart with Add-ons Disabled...", then click on "Continue in Safe Mode" button to do this. Pale Moon will be back to "normal" the next time you start the browser).

Please report back your results after trying this.

Hi,

I'm a different user (not the OP), but I have the very same issue – and even starting Palemoon in safe mode doesn't change anything. I can't play any Youtube video at all, something is weird with my configuration even with default settings…

Any hint appreciated! What information should I provide to assist you in tracking this down?

You should try testing YouTube videos using a fresh Profile in Pale Moon. Click HERE for how to do this.
Let us know if this helps with YouTube videos.
FWIW, I have my UA Override pref set to the following: general.useragent.override.youtube.com = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:55.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/55.0

Hello,

Short update (after updating to Palemoon 27.5.0): using a clean/fresh profile doesn't change anything, Youtube videos still won't play…

So I tried setting your UA agent: this makes the browser crash after a few seconds, and this can be reproduced. Only after resetting the UA agent string to its default, the (non-working) behavior returned. Very strange.

Any hints? For now I have to use another browser to view Youtube videos.

Everything supported except "MSE & WebM VP9" (so I have 5 check marks, i.e., for "HTMLVideoElement", "H.264", "WebM VP8", "Media Source Extensions", and "MSE & H.264"). Also the check mark for the HTML5 video player below is ticked.

Same thing here in Pale Moon 27.5.

So is there anything I can do to make Youtube work in PaleMoon? We seem to have the same HTML5 settings, but even using a fresh profile doesn't work (a least for me and a few others). And that setting a certain UA string causes PaleMoon to crash (instead of just not displaying any Youtube video) is also a little bit frightening…

What Operating System are you using?

If you are using Windows 7 (what I use) then the UA string above should be fine.

However, if you are using WIN8 then change the "NT 6.1" (in post above for WIN7) to "NT 6.2" (for WIN8) and if you are using WIN10 then change the "NT 6.1" to "NT 10.0" (for WIN10)....

Although it may be recommended to set UA string matching your OS, for the most part it should not matter.

Absolutely, to be clear the UA Override should not be causing a crash at all --- so something else must be going on. You should post a crash report by using AppCrashView to help analyze the cause of the crash (and please "hide" the report when posting).

Hello,

I can't reproduce the crash now (both in normal and in safe mode), neither with the default UA string, the first one proposed or the one with the suggested correct OS version setting… Whatever the issue was, it is gone now (I mean the crash, not the video problem itself). Should I encounter it again later, I'll provide an AppCrashView log.

Regarding the video problem: I'm using PaleMoon on a 64 bit Windows 10 system. Other browsers (tried with Chromium and Vivaldi) have no problems with Youtube videos, so it indeed seems related to PaleMoon and not some bigger underlying issue affecting other browsers as well.

Thanks for any hint!

I recall that this version of Windows has been reported to have issues in some other areas recently as well (one I recall was with Avast)....

Yes, I have the Creators Update edition of Windows (i.e., version 10.0.15063) but not installed the "MPEG2 Video Extension" from Microsoft Store or any similar solution, e.g. some weird codec pack.

As I just discovered, I'm able to play Youtube videos with the portable PaleMoon edition (also version 27.5.0) – it seems not to be some fundamental issue (and it apparently works for many other users :)) but some specific problem with the installed version which cannot be fixed by running it with a fresh profile / in safe mode. So for now I'm stumped and have no idea how to investigate further…

^ Hmm, because the installed 27.5 version of PM with a fresh profile and in safe-mode still does not work using the version 10.0.15063 edition of Creator Update makes me wonder if it's an OS problem since in this case the installed PM integrated within the OS has YouTube problems versus the portable PM on the other hand that does not have YouTube problems.... So is there anyone using this specific version of WIN10 that does NOT have the YouTube problems with the installed PM 27.5? (so this can be eliminated as a possible issue)

Hello,

A short update: I meanwhile solved my problem :). But unfortunately I don't know how exactly I achieved that…

I retried with in safe mode and with a fresh profile, and suddenly it worked: I could play Youtube videos! I then migrated everything from my previous profile to the new one (bookmarks, extensions, GUI layout, saved passwords, certificates, etc.), and I even synchronized the various configuration settings (which also include the extensions I use) stored in prefs.js.

So I ended up with a new profile, being more or less identical to the one I started with, with the only difference that the new one works as expected while the old one did not .

I then simply deleted the old profile and continued with the "new" one (which again is, in my opinion, not different from the original one in any aspect).

Sorry for all the fuss – whatever the problem actually was, it is not existent anymore. Happy user again! :D
