Does video stop ~51 seconds in for anyone else?

Unread post by Pallid Planetoid » 2017-07-25, 01:02

Tried this video 3 times, each time the video stops ~51 seconds into video and thereafter will not play at all. Refreshing page repeats same results.

URL link: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-idUSKBN1A90CF?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FtopNews+%28News+%2F+US+%2F+Top+News%29

Does anyone else have this same issue or does the video work for you and play out to the end?

Thanks.

It didn't load at all for me the first time. Second attempt a little bit later had the video play to 00:15 seconds in, so much less than you got. A third attempt got me to the same 15 second timestamp where it froze again.

Works here with scripts from reuters.com and scripts/xhr/frame from reuters.tv enabled. html5 is an abomination though, facilitating the flying videobox while scrolling and offering a toy to the adhd afflicted while increasing cpu usage x5.

You can watch the video here without their shitty js player:

I tried it in Waterfox and Cyberfox up to the 1 minute mark with no problem. Same thing with Pale Moon, but I'm still on v26.5. So . . . .

Judging from the reports and my tests I suspect that MSE is at fault. You can thank google, M$ and netflix for that one. Disable it in Options -> Content and it should work.

Can someone please test if the video still stops if async MSE is disabled?

Windows user here and the latest unstable version installed. Non MSE mode video works.

MSE-MP4 mode video stops before 50 seconds mark is reached.

If loading the stand-alone video link without the player on the page, video plays also with MSE-MP4 mode. So, the player of that page seems to screw things up ;)

Win7 32, latest release x32, the video plays and ends when MSE is disabled ( and much smoother).

It froze for me at 54 sec., MSE for mp4 enabled / async MSE disabled.

@Everyone, the remainder of this post was written before the last three posts were published so apologies if this is disjointed, but wanted to post this...

It seems Reuters is serving very different content, depending on if MSE is on or off.
I didn't realize this earlier - I'd had MSE disabled for mp4 on reuters for a long while (via HTML5 Media Tuner) and never considered that the videos might be substantively different.

With MSE disabled (either fully, or just for mp4) I got a 01:55 news clip. This played fine for me straight through.

But with MSE enabled, Reuters served a much longer, roughly 13:50 video comprising several news segments and inline ads. This froze for me at circa 45 sec. (Firefox 52.2.1esr did play this without trouble.)

EDIT:
The 13 minute video appears to be a playlist(?) with chunks that end with file extension .ts, and the media source in Page Info/Media (after opening the player in its own tab) was: https://queso-cdn.prod.reuters.tv/ca1a7 ... 8c8f43ef57

Re: Does video stop ~51 seconds in for anyone else? video plays shortened version set to "no HTML"

Unread post by Pallid Planetoid » 2017-07-28, 05:01

The video plays a shortened version from ~13 minutes (if I recall) to ~2 minutes and plays through the shortened video when setting the HTML5 Media Player to "no HTML5" (was failing when set to "HTML5 + MSE"). Results apparently in some manner corresponding to the post above.
