Pale Moon updated itself ?
Pale Moon updated itself to version 26.4.1 (x64) and decided to start on the homepage, killing the 37 tabs I had open while I work on my PhD thesis, is this a bug, or a glitch? I am very unhappy if this is what we are to expect from Pale Moon that was otherwise an excellent browser!
Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Options...Advanced...Update... and check Check for update but let me choose whether to install them

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
That seems odd since the current Pale Moon (production) release is actually version 27.4.0.... (or am I missing something?)Gyongi wrote:Pale Moon updated itself to version 26.4.1 (x64).....
As mentioned above, you presumably have this option enabled that is pointed out below:
Current Pale Moon(x86) Release | WIN10 | I5 CPU, 1.7 GHz, 6GB RAM, 500GB HD[20GB SSD]

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Yeah, there isn't even a .1 source release at GitHub.Pale Moon Rising wrote:the current Pale Moon (production) release is actually version 27.4.0
OP failed to mention which version he/she is using though..
If it's some kind of a obscure third party build, anything can be possible.

EDIT:
Scratch that.
OP is actually talking about v26.4.1.
LOL!
Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Ironically, I absolutely never allow software, any software, to update on it's own, regardless of the current version available, never once in almost 30 years of computing.
Two lessons learned in computing, download the application, then install it while off-line, it has saved me countless hours of needless frustration.
I can see that there is no simple answer, so, thanks for your help, but I'll have to search for a new browser. PM was fine for the 5 months I tried it, but this incident ended that.
(PS: whomever it was that wrote he/she, you need to travel more as you'll find it is a woman's name, ha ha)
Thanks!

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
I'm sorry but if that is your argument for ditching a software then it sounds ridiculous, given that the software gives you enough flexibility to tweak itself to your requirements. If you do not want it to update, you can always change that.Gyongi wrote:Ironically, I absolutely never allow software, any software to update on it's own, regardless of the current version available, never once in almost 30 years of computing.

People can correct me here. I guess the auto-update is enabled by default because most users would like to be on the latest-and-greatest version. Probably it's also there to help novice users who may not be comfortable dealing with software installation/uninstallations and so that their setup is automatically updated to protect them from security vulnerabilities that get fixed in newer versions of the browser. Web is a hostile place.
But yeah, it's your choice to use whatever you want. And if you are an experienced user, you could have taken time to get yourself familiar with the settings provided by Pale Moon and tweaked them to your liking.

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
I started with Pale Moon when it was at version (4.0). When Pale Moon 5.0 came out, I updated through the internal updater. The internal updater caused a problem for me because 5.0 would not open. Since that time till now, I've always updated Pale Moon manually by getting the Pale Moon installer, then uninstalling Pale Moon and then using the installer to install the newest version of Pale Moon.Gyongi wrote:Ironically, I absolutely never allow software, any software, to update on it's own, regardless of the current version available, never once in almost 30 years of computing.

I manually do this for both windows and linux Pale Moon.
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox
Linux Debian 12.5 (Bookworm) Xfce w/ Linux Pale Moon, Linux Waterfox, Linux SeaLion, Linux Firefox

Thanks to NIght Wing and others here.
Judging from your response, it seems doubtful that anyone could correct you about anything! Because of your bad manners, I will leave the forum, I don't need to be criticized for asking a question, or making a statement.
I came here for an answer, but all I've seen are references to changing the options, etc.
Thank you.

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Oh, crap! Now I see that this is not related to update to 27.4 (latest) version but rather to some older version 26.4.1. Apologies for my previous post if that is indeed the case.
But this scenario seems highly unlikely unless there is an issue with the update server.

Thank you adesh!adesh wrote:Apologies for my previous post if that is indeed the case.
Perhaps I should have asked how many tabs can you have open and how long will PM maintain them. Another browser I was using could maintain more than 200 before crashing after 6 months.
Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
The whole thing makes no sense. If Pale Moon updated itself, why didn't it update to the latest version which is 27.4? And as someone else pointed out, was there even a 26.4.1 version? I'd check for malware if I were the OP. Also, did the OP download PM from an official source?
Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
I live by the exact same principle! :)Gyongi wrote:I absolutely never allow software, any software, to update on it's own, regardless of the current version available, never once in almost 30 years of computing.
Perhaps in this case, the update occurred simply because you forgot to change the update setting (like pointed out by Pale Moon Rising)?
I never allow any of my internet related software to connect, until after I've taken care of such settings.
How to change the update settings in Pale Moon:
* Update settings for Pale Moon and Search Engines can be changed from here:
'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Update'.
* Update settings for Add-ons can be changed from here:
'Tools' > 'Add-ons' > 'Tools for all add-ons (cogwheel right next to the search field at the top right side of the window)'.
Unchecking 'Update Add-ons Automatically' will prevent the add-ons from updating automatically, but you may will still be informed whenever a new update is available.
Also, keep in mind that many add-ons comes with update settings of their own, capable of bypassing the default configuration.
To completely disable the automatic update checking for add-ons, follow these steps:
1) In the Location Bar (address field), write "about:config" (without quotation marks), and press Enter.
2) In the Search field, write "extensions.update.enabled" (without quotation marks).
(In the window below, the 'extensions.update.enabled' string should now be the only visible one)
3) Change the value for 'extensions.update.enabled' from "true" to "false" by double-clicking on it.
4) Restart Pale Moon.
Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Also there is this setting:
services.sync.prefs.sync.extensions.update.enabled
Could someone enlighten me as to what this does exactly?
I couldn't find anything conclusive about it.

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Not only is it strange that it would update to an old version, but that it's not even the newest of the 26.x series. It's also strange that it would update without your consent. In the years I've been using Pale Moon with the updater turned on, it's never done that. The reason it happened may not be answerable, and when the next browser you choose inconveniences you unexpectedly, it may be just as big a mystery.
Was the "Restore Previous Session" under History not available?

Re: Pale Moon updated itself ?
Yep, there was, in September 2016 (https://www.palemoon.org/releasenotes-archived.shtml). Strange.helloimustbegoing wrote:The whole thing makes no sense. To keep this sorta on-topic, I updated to the current version 27.4 (manually!) last week, and it nuked my session with 50+ tabs. Luckily (sic) I've experienced this previously, so before I closed the browser, I checked in my profile on the C drive and managed to save a copy of sessionstore.bak before it was overwritten. There was no indication from Pale Moon that anything went wrong with the upgrade, or any session corruption or anything like that, it was only when I went to History to 'Restore Previous Session' that I noticed it was greyed out. I opened my copy of sessionstore.bak and manually copied each URL into its own new tab.

No need to copy URLs manually. You can put sessionstore.bak as sessionstore.js in profile directory. Then you can use "restore previous session".

Tried that but it didn't work for me unfortunately, tried all sorts of little tricks from other sources too but none worked. The 'restore previous session' either remained greyed out, or when it was available, it would restore a single blank tab. In the end, I opened a bottle of beer and just copied the URL's out!
