Google maps display problem
Hi all,
I wonder if someone can help me please? I'm using a Windows 10 desktop and Palemoon version 27.3.0 (32-bit) and am having trouble with the display on Google maps where all of the street names display as if seen in a mirror. I have attached a screenshot for your information. I have tried to display the same map in Firefox and MS edge and they both work OK.
Any advice you can give me on correcting this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

Re: Google maps display problem
That's really weird! Some names are still unmirrored on the map; others are mirrored in different ways.
I used Google Maps just yesterday and had no issues with it. Can anyone else reproduce this?

I found the same spot on the map and all the lettering is as it should be.

Re: Google maps display problem
Since Google Maps uses WebGL these days, it may be a bug in your graphics driver (flipping texture orientation).
See if there is an update for your drivers available.

Re: Google maps display problem
Hi all,
Thanks for your replies. I tried the following:
1. I've deleted the cache and cookies but unfortunately this makes no difference
2. Restarted the browser with all adds on disabled and again this makes no difference
3. I don't know much about graphics drivers, however, if this is the same thing as a display adapter, I tried a 'search for updates' via the MS device manager and I appear to have Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1 . When I tried to update this I got a message saying 'The best driver software for your device is already installed'
One thing that I did notice is that when the map is loading it displays correctly and then just before the keyboard is released when the page painting completes, the screen refreshes and the road names are reversed on the refresh.
I had a problem a few weeks ago where the status bar didn't appear and managed to correct this via a post on the forum, but I was wondering whether my installation or profile might have been corrupted at some stage. If so, what is the best way to repair this please.
Thanks again for your help

Re: Google maps display problem
What I would suggest is to try a using a fresh profile, here is a post that explains how to do this: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15405&p=111481#p111481. If this fixes the problem then there is presumably pref setting(s) causing the issue. I can't see any google related prefs that would cause this however which is the dilemma.

Hi,
Thanks for the link on how to set up a new profile. I did this but now, whenever I use the new profile in google maps, after painting completes, the map disappears and the whole web page goes black!! (see attached)

Tony

Re: Google maps display problem
If you have the G41 Express chipset, you're probably running a GMA 4500 for video. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X4500
That's about 10 years old now and only supports up to DirectX 10. I'm not sure how well Windows 10 handles that; if you search for that gpu and win 10 you'll see plenty of not happy results over the past year or two. I think the WDM 1.1 driver that MS installs is the most basic thing to make the video work; I doubt it's truly supporting the full extent of the chip's capabilities.
On the other side of that, Google Maps may not be reacting well to either that driver, or the lack of Direct X 11 support. I would think it could fall back on DX9 support, but things don't always work as you think.

Re: Google maps display problem
Hi eskaton023,
Thanks for your reply. I'm getting a bit out of my depth here, but from what you say, it sounds like I have to live with the problem since there don't appear to be any more up to date drivers. (It's probably time I got a new pc anyway! ) However, the bit that confuses me is that the maps display fine on both Firefox and MS edge.
Regards,
Tony

Re: Google maps display problem
I had this problem with 27.3.0 (64-bit, Win7), too. I tried everything that was mentioned above (delete cache and cookies, disable addons, create new user profile), but the street names still showed up in mirror image. Then I thought to install an older version of PaleMoon, and so far it works in 27.0.0 (64-bit). It did trigger the lite mode on Google maps, which is a bit weird since I also tried 26.0.0 and that didn't trigger the lite mode, but the map still worked.

Because others (including myself) do not have this same problem using 27.3.0 it would suggest that the issue is not a PM version issue but more likely a profile or pref issue. Since you installed another PM version you most likely have a fresh profile and default pref settings as a result and so whatever may have been the cause of the problem has presumably been removed. Did you have different add-ons when you tried the new install?
You might once again try a clean install of the current PMv27.3.0 and see if the problem persists, I'm thinking that you will find you do not have this problem with a "fresh" install of the current PM release.
If you decide to check this out then let us know your results.

Re: Google maps display problem
Hello,
The same "mirror" problem on Google Maps here.
PM 27.3.0 (64-bit) on Win7.
There are no graphics driver updates available for my graphics card. The problem doesn't show on Vivaldi (Chrome based).
Thank you for your help.

Re: Google maps display problem
I've just tried PM Portable 27.3.0 32-bit and 64-bit from a USB stick, without any add-ons and extensions, and both show the mirror problem in Google Maps.
Cheers.

Your driver is from 2012. you really should get a newer graphics driver.

The 2012 driver version 15.17.19.2869 (8.15.10.2869) on my system is the latest (and last):

I use Google Maps a lot. I guess this is the end for PM on this machine?

Is there a reason you are using Pale Moon version 27.3.0?WestOne wrote:Thanks again for your reply.

Before giving up you might consider trying the current PM27.4.1 release.
