Pale Moon forum

Is anyone else having problems with Facebook not displaying properly? In the past two days, Facebook has been broken on Pale Moon, such that the Search box is dislocated from the blue bar at the top of the page, and now the "Notifications" area (Friends, Messages, etc.) is superimposed on the Photos/Videos and Photo Albums links above the text entry box for Status Updates.

Also, the Chat list in the lower right corner can no longer be closed once opened.

Behavior is normal in Opera.

I'm mainly curious to know whether anyone else is having the problem. Rather than do a bunch of troubleshooting gymnastics, I'll just use Opera as a dedicated Facebook browser.

My father uses chrome.(I am working on him to get him to use palemoon/).Same problem there too,also the entire header of facebook page disappears entirely when scrolling.

Using Pale Moon 26.3.2 on Windows 7, I have none of the problems you've mentioned in Facebook. Search box is where it is supposed to be, no superimposed areas, Chat appears normal.

I've compared Facebook in Pale Moon to other browsers: Firefox, Chrome, IE and all the browsers display and interface with Facebook in the same was as it displays and interfaces in Pale Moon.

So I would have to conclude that the problem is not Pale Moon.

You might try testing in a new Profile to see if this fixes Facebook and if so then your problem would likely be either an add-on or preference setting(s) causing the problems.

I think what is happening is that the header is scrolling with the rest of the page so it disappears as you scroll down.

Try clearing cache and/or Facebook cookies.

I did have this problem one time on the Profile page (not on others however) but the problem did not persist and if I recall it only occurred a couple of times and since then no issues of this kind any more, knock on wood.

Oh yea NorrinRadd, as I suggested above, before testing in a new Profile you might consider clearing cache and/or clearing Facebook cookies to see if this helps.

I did try clearing the cache. That's always the first thing I try.

I don't know how to clear cookies.

I know creating a new profile is considered rather basic troubleshooting. Since FB works fine in Opera, creating a new PM profile is more hassle than I'm willing to undertake.

There have been no changes to any extensions or plug-ins. Only Pale Moon itself has changed, via the two recent updates. The FB misbehavior began shortly after the most recent update.

Now all facebook.com cookies have been removed so you're done and can close remaining windows that you have used to do this: Test Facebook to see if the pages display correctly now (note: Facebook will recreate all cookies, if this helps then presumably your Facebook cookies had been corrupted).

Btw, NorrinRadd - What version of Pale Moon are you using? And on what OS?

You shouldn't have to use specific pre-Goanna overrides for Facebook - the site seems to work perfectly fine here with the overrides that are in place out of the box?

Well, it "broke" soon after the most recent PM update, and remained broken until the UA change. With the various hidden vagaries always happening at Facebook, it could certainly have been a coincidence that the UA change "fixed" it.

This DOES fix the display problem, but reintroduces the video playback problem. If there were just a way to have BOTH go away.....-sigh-

Hmm, I don't seem to have a problem playing videos, found 3 embedded videos and they all played fine after clicking on them....

Videos work fine over here as well with changed UA's.

Since I don't use FB very much (only us it for when I need to see something that has no other option to see it), so to do a more thorough test I looked up a FB page of a politician that would be expected to have a lot of videos and which did and found that embedded videos all played fine, but I did discover that some videos that opened a new page would play okay but others would start to play but then stop. So there's that....

Okay, I did an exhaustive test switching back and forth between the settings I have been using and the current default UA settings and found that you are absolutely correct of course, that is to say in my case the video playback results are virtually the same in either case and there are no observable rendering issues in either case as well, that is with the exception of one glaring problem using the default settings (see below). Of course there is the one caveat that it appears this may not be the case for other users however.

... anyway, getting back to my case....

The following results were consistent after switching back and forth between the two UA settings four different times to make sure the outcome was absolutely persistent.
Using the settings I've been using ("pre-Goanna"), I will always get the "play" icon in the middle of the video if it is a video that can be played that is (see example): Using the current default settings, in every case the "play" icon that is there to inform whether an embedded image is a video or not does not display (consistently missing see below): Other than this I frankly do not see any appreciable difference either way.

That said, because of the convenience of knowing whether an embedded image is just a picture or in fact is actually a video, I'm inclined to want to stay with the "pre-Goanna" settings I've been using in my case.
