Issues with PM page menu and YouTube search results videos

If possible, please include the output of help->troubleshooting information (as text):

Strange issues: certain [longer] items in the menu on the official Pale Moon site appear cut off. Or, rather, the submenu background is narrower than necessary, a few characters appearing on the outside, mostly invisible. Wrong font type/size maybe...?
Also, while until now videos on the YouTube search results page used to start automatically upon mouse hover, with 33.9.1 they stopped doing that.

Noticed this today, after having upgraded yesterday to 33.9.1 from 33.9.0 (late, I know). However, after reverting back to 33.9.0 - very same build used before - the menu bug is still present. Haven't paid attention until now so I don't know if it did happen before or not.
Videos on YT do start automatically now with 33.9.0 and blank profile. Not with my usual profile though.

Maybe profile got corrupt by a bad build?

Haven't installed or uninstalled any add-ons recently. Tried with new/blank profile in safe mode, menu bug still happens.

Both browser versions have been built using UXP code from July 3rd 2025. Maybe I should rebuild 33.9.1, but it takes a little over three hours, and there's no guarantee it will fix anything.

Basically I just wonder if anyone else experienced similar issues before?

Any hints or ideas are welcome.

The Pale Moon site’s drop-downs appear correctly for me using the official build. It might be worth noting that I replace any seriffed text in the Latin alphabet with FreeSerif, which is designed for metrical compatibility with Times New Roman.

Thanks for replying. My profile lists Noto Serif for Latin serif fonts and it's been like that for a long time. I don't have FreeSerif installed.
Changed to serif (official default?) now and nothing changed. I believe most sited use their own fonts and I let them do that. There must be something else at play here.

I use YouTube's Search Result Page often to find things concerning music, surfing, archery, linux, etc. I have no problems with it's Search Result Page when using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 33.9.1 (GTK2) in both 64 bit MX Linux 25 (Infinity) Xfce and 64 bit Debian 13.3 (Trixie) Xfce.

After looking over your Application Basics, I noticed one of them is:

NoScript causes problems in Pale Moon for quite a few people. Moonchild has expressed that many times. Moonchild has said "not to use it" because even if NoScript is uninstalled, it leaves remnants of itself behind which will cause problems. I do not use NoScript.

There are some here on the Pale Moon Forum site which defend NoScript, but it seems to me, NoScript does cause problems. Since you are using NoScript, maybe, just maybe, NoScript might be the problem for you with YouTube.

Just a guess on my part.

Thank you. I'm unbiased on this matter. Fact is, I had NoScript installed in this profile for a very long time, and used it in Firefox too, long before switching to Pale Moon, and the issues I stumbled upon today have not existed before in PM even with NoScript installed. Therefore I'm pretty confident it couldn't be the cause, unless there has been some subtle change to the YT page. I'll keep digging and testing. Will also try to vacuum the SQLite databases after I build the necessary script.

Any idea about the menu bug?

EDIT: Damn it, you were right... kinda.

Somehow I hadn't noticed that the domain google.com was blocked in NoScript. Now, I really don't remember if it was like that before and it just worked, or it has recently been added to the page/scripts as mandatory. Just a few days ago I had no such problems.
Either way, I unblocked it and now hovering works. So, one down one to go.

The menu bug cannot possible be related to NoScript as I did test with a fresh blank profile. Interestingly, this does not happen in SeaLion 33.9.1 freshly built by myself today even using the latest UXP code. So maybe a bug in my system could be ruled out since they both are based on very similar code...?

Wouldn't argue with you on this. Just that some people are different than others in certain ways which makes them unable to work with others' choices. In time I did try the - at the time - new blocker add-ons, but none of them could stick. Maybe my brains work in a weird way. Even now I have installed eMatrix in SeaLion and for the life of me cannot wrap my head around setting it up properly even for one site. To others it may be a breeze - to me it's confusing as hell.
On the other hand, NoScript + RequestPolicy + YARIP seem pretty straightforward to me. So yeah...

Anyway, as mentioned above it was my own fault for not seeing/checking the blocked domain in NoScript. Now YT works as before.

I inherited NoScript and RequestPolicy from my pre-Pale Moon days also, and kept using them for years, until I decided to assign their functions to µBlock, which I already had installed anyway. I had always thought that my browsing experience with NoScript was stable because I never suffered crashes or similar, but I have got better performance on various sites (with JavaScript turned off!) with µBlock as script-blocker than with NoScript. I resisted switching for years, but I have found µBlock up to the task. Abandoning it was the right choice for me, and I recommend the same.

No worries. I agree that µBlock and ηMatrix have inferior interfaces to NoScript and RequestPolicy, and this was one of the last reasons I was so slow to change. Elsewhere, I have mused that my dream extension would be an alternative front-end to advanced µBlock or ηMatrix which uses the agreeable, traditional interface conventions of NoScript, RequestPolicy etc. Á few years ago, I encouraged a study of NoScript to uncover why it is benign for some, but not others; the devil is in the technical details. Perhaps many lingering NoScript users could finally switch if the alternative looked like NoScript (except for branding) on the outside.

To follow up, earlier I managed to build PM 34.0.0a1 and the menu bug is still present. After a little fiddling in YARIP I could fix it but it's actually a workaround since without YARIP code the bug would still be present. No idea why that is.

As for various blockers, maybe it's more about users' browing habits. Certain domains could employ some convoluted code that triggers issues in NoScript. Personally I have a very low activity online, and the domains I visit don''t seem to upset it. And as they say "if it ain't broken don't fix it".

Now I'm off to sleep after a very very long day.
