how can I change (enlarge) ALL the fonts displayed by pale moon

Unread post by grgoffe » 2025-04-20, 00:04

Operating system:Fedora 42 (Linux)
Browser version:33.7.0 (64bit) GTK2
32-bit or 64-bit browser?:64
Problem URL:all
Browser theme (if not default):
Installed add-ons:
Installed plugins: (about:plugins):

Howdy,

I am somewhat sight challenged and am having trouble with the TINY fonts used by Pale Moon. I have changed the config option "layout.css.dev.Pixels.per.px" to 2.1 which helped quite a bit but didn't get ALL the fonts. I'm looking for just one setting that says "enlarge fonts by %'.

Also, the help->troubleshooting link has a button "copy text to clipboard" which only picked up "NONE". The "about:config" url(?) needs a "show changed only" button.

If possible, please include the output of help->troubleshooting information (as text):

Install this add-on. You might find it convenient.
https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/zoom-label/

You can sort the list in about:config by the "Status" field.

Kris,

Thanks for responding.

I must apologize for not being more specific in my request.

I think I have zooming down now. My problem, more specifically, is the text in the various "bars" AND menus that PM displays. I'm checking out the plugin you referred for more information

Best regards,

George...

Yes, there is such functionality.

Kris,

I don't see where the two popups(?) came from. In my browser there is nothing after "help" at the top. Is there a config setting that I'm missing?

By the way, this is a Linux system, specifically a Fedora 42 system. Is your system windows perhaps?

Regards,

George...

Try this:
https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/theme-tweaker/

It only works for the PM UI. Toolbars, menus etc.

For page content I use the ctrl key and mouse wheel.

I don't see where the two popups(?) came from.
Right click on any toolbar and select Customize, it will open Customize Toolbar.
Then drag the 100% indicator to the desired location.

Kris,

Fortunately I Found it!

Unfortunately, it didn't help.

Here's a screenshot... See the top bars? Tiny fonts. The menus are all TINY fonts. HARD TO SEE.

Firefox seems to have solved this problem with the "about:config" setting, "layout.css.dev*'. Setting this value to 2.1 works mostly but FF still has troubles with things like the "download/save" menu among others. This woks for the content that PM displays but not the bars at the top of the display and most/all menus.

Does this help?

Best regards,

George...

Indeed, I tried it in Puppy Linux, the font size of the browser GUI is not controlled. Strange...

But it starts working if you create a userChrome.css file in the chrome subfolder of the browser user profile folder.

userChrome.css :

Code: Select all

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* set default namespace to XUL */
* { font-size: 20px !important; }
You can set the desired font size instead of "20px" in userChrome.css and the addon will start working too.

@Moonchild:

GTK nsLookAndFeel() ignores the aDevPixPerCSSPixel parameter.
There should be something like "aFontStyle.size *= aDevPixPerCSSPixel;" before return.

I made all the fonts larger in the interface with userChrome.css with this code:

Code: Select all

/*Global UI font*/
 * {font-size: 15px !important;
}

I'm a happy camper. The userChrome.css worked GREAT!

Best regards to ALL who responded and MY ETERNAL GRATITUDE.

Howdy,

Oops. Spoke too soon.

The top bars and tab text was changes... This is GREAT!

The save file dialogue did not change.

Anyone have any ideas? Another .css file?

Regards,

George...

As far as I understand, your problem is not with the fonts in the browser, but with the system settings of the GTK fonts. Unless something else is specified in the browser (for example, using userChrome.css or installing themes in the browser), the browser interface inherits the system fonts and this is what you need to change. As for the file save dialog, it is most likely a system one, and the browser simply uses it.

Perhaps people more familiar with Linux can tell you how to configure the system font.
Or, for example, look here:

This behaviour would have been intentional when implemented by Mozilla.

layout.css.devPixelsPerPx defines the size of a CSS pixel. System fonts such as message-box are the size of system fonts, regardless of the size of the CSS pixel.
While testing HiDPI situations would be useful, scaling system fonts would break the use case where users already have the correct system font size but want to change the default size at which web pages render, i.e. widget font sizes should follow what is set in the system, not what is defined within the application for CSS to be used on web content.

I don't really see an issue here that should be solved within Pale Moon, but feel free to explain if I misunderstand.

At least I can say that in Pale Moon, it works differently in GTK and Windows versions. In Windows, the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx parameter is always respected. In GTK, it is NOT respected for elements that use the default font, i.e. when there is no explicit CSS rule that sets the font size.

I have provided you with links to the corresponding code in Pale Moon for GTK and Windows. You can also look at the fixed GTK code in Firefox 60. However, it is more complicated there, probably due to the reorganization of the code.
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/rele ... .0/source/

However, I am not completely sure that the problem is limited to the difference in the GTK and Windows versions of Pale Moon that I have mentioned (gtk/nsLookAndFeel.cpp, nsLookAndFeel::GetFontImpl(), "aFontStyle.size *= aDevPixPerCSSPixel;").
The easiest way is to add this line of code to widget/gtk/nsLookAndFeel.cpp and see if the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx setting works for elements that use the default font size.

It might make sense to look for something in Bugzilla, but I'll leave that to someone else who has the desire...

I already looked at various bz bugs before replying. The added complexity in FF 60 seems to have been to cater to multi-monitor and/or wayland. It is however odd that the parameter is passed in but never used. I'm fine with adding the multiplier, but will probably put it behind a separate pref to not break the potential native font size setup users may have.
Please open an issue on the repo for this so I don't forget?

It's better if you do it. At least you'll write a formulation that's more understandable to you and with a comfortable amount of detail for you. And I've always had trouble with that...

The save file dialog is produced by the operating system. You would need to change the size of font used by the operating system to change that. I actually did that with MacOS by using an app that allowed me to change the font sizes used.
