So I'm having a weird issue where YouTube plays fine in regular window mode and even in theater mode but when I go to full screen I get a weird video stuttering, audio is fine.

It does not do it when in safe mode. I have disabled all of my add on's and it still does it.

Hoping someone see's something in the info that would help.
Thanks

Re: Jittery Video in Youtube Full Screen

Unread post by Night Wing » 2024-06-13, 10:29

I visit YouTube everyday. I'm always on the lookout for surfing videos since surfing has been my main hobby since 1965 when I was 15 years which makes me 74 years old and I still surf.

I watch all of my videos in full screen mode and in high definition mode if the video is geared for it. I experience no video stuttering in any YT video I watch using the newest version of Pale Moon. But I do not use the Windows operating system.

I use three different 64 bit linux distros which you can see in my signature which also means I use 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2) with 33.1.1 being the newest version at the time of this post.

My browser theme for Pale Moon is Past Modern Revisited (2.10.2). I also have the old uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30 version which is enabled for YT. I do not have a YT account. Since YT is trying to kill adblockers, I use the Permissions tab and block all Store Cookies and Site Data as well as block all Pop Up windows so this keeps the YT ads to a minimum.

Keep in mind I am using a desktop tower computer hooked up to a 32" external monitor and see no problems with YT videos.

Below are three examples of YT videos which I watch in Full Screen and I view these videos in their highest corresponding high definition modes.

Re: Jittery Video in Youtube Full Screen

Perhaps I should add my actual computer specs for the record.

I am running a Asus X470 F Gaming Motherboard with a 5800X3D chip cooled by a Sythe Fuma II cooler,
using 32 gigs of GSkill 14-14-14-34 timings at 3200mhz
Running a 6800XT Taichi Video card with a Asus Xonar DGX Headphone amp sound card. All running on a 2tb M.2 drive.
Powered by a 850 watt Seasonic power supply and cased in a Lian Li -O11 EVO XL with 10 fans.

This system has been running without issue for over 6 months and shows no signs of video micro stuttering in any other browser including this one except in full screen mode. Full screen mode works without issue in FF.

The Micro stuttering I'm referring to is like watching a video in 20 fps kinda stutter.

Again, Pale Moon does not show this issue in Safe mode but I still get this issue even with all add-on's disabled.

I am hoping that someone will be able to look at the trouble shooting list and give me a clue on what else may be causing this issue.

Ok, so I just made an interesting discovery. I am running a dual monitor setup with 27" Ips screens.

If Pale moon is displayed on my # 1 monitor, full screen mode is fluid and normal.
If I pull Pale Moon to my second monitor, it micro stutters.

This is with all add on's turned on. So this issue only shows up if I run Pale Moon on my second monitor which just
so happens to be my main monitor.

Any Ideas on what would cause this?

Stutters in accelerated applications (video playback and games) on secondary monitors is a pretty well-known problem in general. Usually this has to do with how the compositor handles the screen at the system level. Some suggestions to fix it are:
  1. Disable desktop composition transparency (Right Click on the desktop > Personalize > Window color > Uncheck "Enable transparency" > Save Changes)
  2. Disable hardware acceleration in Pale Moon (Preferences -> advanced -> tab general -> uncheck "Use hardware acceleration" -- restart the browser)
  3. Some people also suggested that running the second monitor at a refresh rate that isn't a multiple of the primary can cause stuttering, so make sure that e.g. if your primary is set to 60 Hz, set your secondary to 120 Hz, or the likes. I have no experience with this particular potential fix, so YMMV.

Thank you Moonchild, I have tried all three of your suggestions. The only one that made any difference was the turning off Hardware acceleration. It did fix the micro stuttering but still had lagging issues but they were less noticeable.

So I went and disabled all my add-ons again and that lagging went away.

So now it's just a matter of going through and finding which one is causing the last issue.

Thank you again for helping me with this issue.

So It turns out that NoSquint was the culprit. But this brings up another problem. Now all my text is super small and site zoom levels are now gone.

I could not find a way to default the font on web pages anywhere. Is there a way to get Pale Moon to remember what zoom levels you choose on each web site?

I tried Zoom Label and it causes the same exact issue.

Thanks

I would suggest ditching NoScript in general and using Matrix instead. It works differently, but does the same thing (and is completely compatible with PM).

It's NoSquint, not NoScript.

There isn't a way, and unfortunately, whenever the question is asked the reply is usually that such a feature shouldn't be a core browser function, and anyway, there is an extension (i.e. NoSquint) for that which does even more.

By default, Pale Moon does remember the zoom level (chosen with Ctrl +/ Ctrl - or Ctrl+wheel)for each site, but of course if it does that, it can't at the same time not use a default for all sites (which would conflict with separate zoom levels per site). If you want to disable the per-site setting and use a global zoom level, in about:config set browser.zoom.siteSpecific to false.

Thank you Moonchild, my setting was set to false already, although I'm not sure why as I would have never done that.
I'm wondering if this was a issue with Nosquint as I remember long ago that if you disabled Nosquint it would ask if you wanted the
default settings put back for Pale Moon and now it no longer asked that when disabling.

Either way, setting it to "true" fixed that problem.

Thanks again.

You could set a minimum font size to get rid of the tiny font problem.

It would be preferred compared to doing every web site I go to, but I don't know where that setting resides. Could you help me with that?
