Palemoon very slow loading websites compared to Brave

Unread post by Vortex » 2023-11-29, 20:12

I have recently been getting frustrated with the very slow loading of websites in Palemoon, so I tried it in safe mode, which made no difference. Then I tried comparing the loading time to Brave browser, which I also have installed on the same pc. Nearly all websites are loading much quicker in Brave. The worst one is odysee.com where I can literally wait for 60 seconds in palemoon, then copy the url, open Brave, click paste and go, the video loads in Brave, I close Brave go back to Palemoon and it'll still be loading.

Also tried clearing the cache- no change.

Any ideas what could be the cause? Thanks.

I just downloaded Brave and opened this Odysee video in both Brave and Pale Moon: https://odysee.com/@AlphaNerd:8/meta-kn ... r-profit:d

Brave opened it in 5 seconds, Pale Moon opened it in 6-7 seconds. So I'm not seeing the kind of difference you are referring to.

If you open Tools-Preferences-Advanced Preferences-General, do you have "Use Hardware Acceleration When Available" checked?

I routinely re-install browsers with a fresh and clean profile once every 3-4 months, so I may have an advantage there.

I had a look at odysee.com. Loaded in about 6 secs
PM 32.5.0, 64 bit, old profile just moved to a new OS, fair amount of content blocking and juvenile hackery, 50 open tabs

I suggest you grab a portable build of PM. A good way to test for possible profile corruption

"Use Hardware Acceleration When Available" is checked.

Downloaded Palemoon portable and tried it, on that everything is much faster same as Brave.

So I guess this is a problem with my profile. Is there a way to quickly rebuild it without having to start from scratch?

Start from scratch. You can't repair that which is broke. And do it slow.

If you start Pale Moon with your old profile and go to 'Tools-Set Up Sync', you'll be able to sync a lot of stuff like bookmarks, passwords, preferences, history from your old profile to your new profile. I think you'll have to grab the extensions you want all over again. I would go slow and test it out - for example, if your preferences cause slowness, you may want to start over with another new profile without syncing your old preferences. Or if an extension causes slowness, try disabling it and test the speed.

Personally, I do it the way @doofy says - I start from scratch each time.

Noticing that Vortex set up an acc here in early 2021 I wonder if that was when he first installed PM.
And that he then updated to the ill fated build of early 2022(?) and then "updated" through it, not noticing the advice not to do so.
And it was downhill from there...

Moonchild's profile back up tool is good.

I should never have to start from scratch because I made it a habit before discovering Pale Moon to regularly make backups of my current browser data folder.

So while I have never had a problem in Pale Moon caused by a messed up profile, I have a set zip files of the C:\Users\susan\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon folder, each named with the date that it was made, and which I continue to make.

It is so easy to do, that I highly recommend it!

Thanks for all the great advice

When I next get some free time I'll try out all your suggestions. IIRC I've just been updating the original installation since before I joined in 2021, so that's a likely issue.

@suzyne that sounds like a good idea for the future, is it just a case of replacing that backup folder after a fresh install, or is there more to it than that?

Re: Backing-up your Pale Moon profile... you could always use Moonchild's 'Pale Moon profile backup tool'. :D

Does a neat job... and you can watch as all your files are being saved too... if that sort of thing floats your boat. :geek:

There are no extra steps or complications, I just unzip the compressed file and overwrite everything from the default profile in the Pale Moon folder (making sure that the browser is closed!) and everything will be the same as before.

This method is also handy after making a fresh install of Pale Moon on a second computer taking only a minute to set it up to my liking, instead of doing it all manually and taking much longer.

New installations using the Backup Tool or by using a saved backup of my profile PM folder both have the same slow loading issue.

Went to try Sync but not sure how to have 2 profiles running at the same time. Can someone please point me at info on how to do that, otherwise it's start from scratch.

Pale Moon has a much lighter footprint, user-friendlier settings, & isn't beholden to Google like the competition.

If your supercomputer is down, you need your fast gaming computer to use a social network like Facebook or Twitter/X.

I try to default to the most hegemony-resistant tool & use the others as needed.

On my Linux systems I use Opera VPN to see sites that block Tor. Brave is a handy backup to Tor Browser itself. It has slightly the best performance & running stability of Chromium browsers on my machines, so I can corroborate your experience.

Vivaldi desktop is best-looking imo & is worthwhile. Geography matters & as a SFBA native, companies not here are better than those that are like Google & Brave, & I will include Microsoft in Washington. Brave is cluttered with features but overall is an excellent browser.

Brave Android is superfluous. I'm usually in DuckDuckGo, Opera, or Tor in Android.

Developers have their priorities within constraints for us to consider.

Open Pale Moon and navigate to about:profiles
There you'll have options to create a new profile, open the new profile in a new browser window (while the current profile is still open), save the new profile as default, delete old profiles, etc.
