Walmart searches missing thumbnails

Unread post by DoctorM » 2021-10-28, 17:13

Recently I've noticed that when I search Walmart's website, the thumbnail images are missing, but when I click through to an item, the full size pictures come up just fine.

Example: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=milk

I tried using a new profile. I tried setting the useragent. Nothing. Checking the html code, I was able to copypasta the .jpeg link and the picture would load fine. It just won't appear in the layout of the search results.

Edit: PM v29.4.1 64-bit on (cough) Win7.

Try posting the correct section and providing correct information for Web Compatibility reports.

Or do we need to eliminate this board too? Oh and if you are thinking of getting pissy and trying reddit instead then you may as well not bother posting at all because they are not developers and have no real knowledge of how the code works and we actively disregard tech reports on enemy platforms and from the people who post there.

The site doesn't report any error and in fact I can see that images are downloaded properly.
Messing around randomly I saw that the CSS somehow ends up giving a height of 0px to one of the elements containing the picture itself.
I didn't go too deep so I can't say what causes it, but eventually after deleting classes from HTML nodes I managed to show something so it might be something like relying on an implementation quirk.

@New Tobin Paradigm - Sorry, I had no idea this was the wrong board. I thought I was asking for support with the Pale Moon browser since other browser don't have an issue with Walmart...
and I've never posted on Reddit in my life. What a weird statement.

What Tobin meant was to please post your concerns in the correct board on this forum, i.e. Web Compatibility, and following the rules as outlined in that board for providing information. This is, after all, a request for support you have with a particular website, not with the browser's general operation.

No console errors here either.
And as vanilla noted, the images do download (from walmartimages.com) - but search-result thumbnails don't display.

Well someone tell Chinmart that they should provide a height on the element Vannilla pointed out.

I was about to write a somewhat lengthy post about some experiments I made and their result, until I discovered that the offending DOM element does have a height property defined in the CSS and it's set to... zero.
Disabling the property using the devtools (using the little checkbox on the left of the property name) changes nothing regardless of its value, probably because the rest of the CSS in one way or another still gives it a height of 0, but by forcing it to 290px (the height of the thumbnails that are supposed to appear), everything is fine.

It's just some sort of Chromeism. This has been a thing on other sites as well before and it is always a Chromeism. But I guess if you wanna buy from sweatshops then Walmart is the marketplace.

Probably bad use of padding again to "force a height with padding" which isn't spec compliant but works in Chrome.

I noticed this behavior some time ago. This is what the error console tells me, if it helps:

What's in the console are just warnings, not errors. They have no bearing on this.

Toolkit error console = Tools->Developer tools->Error console. Click the clear button to clear existing output before you reload your problematic webpage.
Web developer console = Tools->Developer tools-> Web console, mouseover the icons on top to find the tab whose tooltip says 'Web console'. Click the trashcan icon just below that on the extreme left to clear output.

Got it... not that it seems helpful.
The pics come from walmartimages.com. Only pertinent warning I get is:

Code: Select all

Timestamp: 11/2/2021 5:10:07 AM
Warning: Content Security Policy: Ignoring “https://i5.walmartimages.com” within script-src: ‘strict-dynamic’ specified

It was said that there were no errors. My post contains errors. The bottom two like I said.
