You've been here almost 10 years. almost 250 posts.
Even if you're a slow study I'm pretty sure you do know you can, for a while (several hours), edit your posts with the functions of the forum software provided, adding anything that might be relevant to the post.

Instead, you've made 4 successive posts to this thread in a very short amount of time. That is what Tobin meant with triple/quadruple posting.

We're asking you to kindly limit that kind of rapid fire posting; this isn't a whiteboard or chatroom. If you are still within the editing grace period (you have the "pencil" icon available to edit your post) then please use that editing function.

Now that you have tested using a new "clean" profile with good results - this would suggest that your profile has something different than mine that is causing the issue in your case (likely having something to do with the same issue that Falna has described). I don't blame you for not wanting to start all over with a "clean" profile and lose all of your previous settings.

I installed the "Web Developers Toolbox" extension - to check this out and what I think is the Style Sheet that was disabled is the following (keep in mind - you need to be on the NYTimes website):

You can try disabling this Style Sheet (unchecking it) - to see if this helps (you can always enable the style-sheet again by checking it again)

Off-topic: Now that I installed this add-on - I can't figure out how to disable the Tool-bar for this add-on. I would think this would do it (open show) - but the toolbar remains:

Addendum: I don't think the "Option" > "Options" > "General" tab settings work properly - the checked option above (first option) disables the "Context Menu" (which I would have thought should be the case for the second option if checked that mentions "... context menu" (which doesn't appear to do anything). The only way I guess to disable the add-ons toolbar is to disable the add-on itself.

(not cool considering it requires a restart to enable/disable the extension)

I'm sitting here wondering why Troubleshooting information still hasn't been provided. A setting or multiple settings could be causing the issue and that information could help track down which, but no. Can't do that. That's too easy.

Thanks VERY much, Pallid Planetoid, for your continued help and patience. I now realize that I misunderstood what was being asked for in terms of Troubleshooting. Your message clarified that for me. I've now posted the Troubleshooting info in this message, using the Hide tag.
Thanks, too, for identifying what may be the problematic font on the NYTimes site. Since I have already uninstalled the Web Developer's Toolbox, I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

cyberreine - to translate the post above: go into about:config (type this [about:config] in your Pale Moon address bar - click on "I promise to be careful") then search for "direct2d.disabled" (absent quotes) and double-left-click the gfx.direct2d.disabled setting to change (toggle) from your current value "true" to the browsers default "false" setting (you have apparently changed this setting from the default at some point - possibly unknowingly via an add-on perhaps). Then restart Pale Moon for this change to take - which should then fix your font problem for this website.

MANY THANKS to New Tobin Paradigm for identifying the problem, and to Pallid Planetoid for explaining the message and what I had to do. I followed the instructions, and I'm delighted to report that the NYTimes articles now appear as they should!

I'm still puzzled by when and why the direct2d setting was set to "true." I am sure that I never messed with that setting on Pale Moon. Since Firefox has been able to show the NYTimes articles correctly from the start, I decided to see what the setting looks like on Firefox. To my surprise, gfx.direct2d.disabled is set to "true" on Firefox! Anyway, I'm happy that both browsers now show the NYTimes articles correctly, and I'm most grateful for the help I received here.

I am having the same issue with letters below the line being cut off. Even though it is a Basilisk issue, I was directed here.

So... my gfx.direct2d.disabled setting was correct in the config.about setting I am having the problem. So below is my GFX section:

An FYI in the event that you changed the gfx.direct2d.disabled setting (in about:config) to the browsers default "false" value - keep in mind that you still need to restart Pale Moon for the change to take effect.

It's a rendering issue, which makes it a platform issue. It's pointless to make separate topics for the exact same website and exact same issue on that website, so yeah.

No, it's not. what you pasted is a selection of the changed preferences section, not the graphics section which is what we need. Unless you know exactly what we need, you should never provide an incomplete troubleshooting report since we can't do anything with it. Post the entire contents if you are posting anything. The setting change that fixed the rendering of NYT for the other person was already the setting on my laptop, no change was made by me. So no restart was needed.

OK so you've explicitly disabled all compositing hardware acceleration, which includes Direct2D.

I'm assuming you have a reason for that, so working from that assumption for a workaround.

The problem with the site seems to be that the font in use has strange metrics that require proper font kerning to render legibly within the line height without losing the bottom stems. No hardware acceleration means no font kerning.
At the risk of causing stability issues you can work around it browser-wide for this one site by allowing Skia to render page content as well as Canvas which makes the software rendering "like Chrome", but I don't recommend it. To try this, set gfx.content.azure.backends to direct2d1.1,skia,cairo - a browser restart is required after this change.
