Redeeming American Airlines frequent flier miles causes crash

Unread post by BenFenner » 2018-06-23, 19:34

I'm at a client's house and they are experiencing a Pale Moon crash when attempting to redeem frequent flier miles at the American Airlines website. The application crashes during the search for flights. I don't have much time here, so I'm posting the result of AppCrashView and can provide more info when I get home.

This is 64-bit Pale Moon 27.9.3 (current) with ABPrime 1.0.7 installed.
The problem goes away when I rune Pale Moon in Safe Mode! So it looks like I have some more digging to do...

I'm trying to setup this Client with Firefox as a temporary work-around, but the lastest 64-bit Firefox with uBLock Origin installed is failing too (the tab crashes instead of the entire app).
I'm going to try Firefox in Safe Mode right now.
Hmmm, Safe Mode in Firefox crashes the tab as well. Seem Pale Moon Safe Mode is behaving better than Firefox here.

I think you can attempt to re-produce this error without needing an account here: https://www.americanairlines.com/bookin ... oking=true
Enter a destination and click "Search" in the bottom-right of the page.

Following your instructions, I picked a flight from DFW to IAH, one person for todays date, clicked on the Search button and after a "One Moment Please" prompt, It brought me to this page below which I'll post as a direct clickable link. Pale Moon did not crash. Note, if American Airlines changes some info and the link does not work later on, I'll post a screenshot next time.

I'm using 64 bit linux Pale Moon 27.9.3 runnning in 64 bit linux Mint 18.3 (Sylvia) Xfce. The two addons I use are Adblock Latitude 5.0.1 and the old NoSquint 2.1.9.1 and these two addons were installed 6 months ago when I installed linux Mint. BTW, Adblock Latitude is "enabled" too.

I also have linux Adobe Flash 30.0.0.113 (Shockwave Flash 30.0 r0) installed as well.

Sig[3].Name=Fault Module Name
Sig[3].Value=dwrite.dll
I'd say that's a Windows error, DirectWrite (part of DirectX) is falling over, probably the same thing that's affecting Firefox.

A temp. workaround might be to disable some of the DirectX/GDI/ClearType features using Pale Moon Commander (Advanced Preferences) in the various tabs under Graphics.

I'm unsure whether running SFC (System File Checker) actually checks this file, or those it relies on, but it shouldn't hurt to run it.

I'm back here at home and Pale Moon is hanging for me on this machine too (completely different home-built computer versus the old Dell at my client's house).

Not sure if this matters, but the origin city I'm using is CAE and the destination is STL. I'll try to figure out some more info.

A hang is different to a crash, try WhatIsHang and pasting the report in a reply.

I'm unable to reproduce the crash on current Pale Moon release on Win 7 (with full hardware acceleration enabled).

It's quite possible in this case your use of 64-bit versions hits a snag in your video driver. Are they up to date?

Site works for me on Win7 / 32 (with uBlock enabled).

Pale Moon v28.0.0a4 does not crash using that URL and searching for flights. Windows 10 64-bit, using 64-bit Pale Moon.

As normal, it would help greatly to include Troubleshooting Information (see help menu) so we know the environment this crash occurs in for you.

I'm fully aware of the difference between an app crash, and an app hang. The app is crashing.

I'm on a third machine here (Dell laptop) and can confirm the failure on this machine as well.

Here is the troubleshooting information from this Dell laptop. It's safe to say the video card drivers on all 3 machines I've tested are not terribly up to date. I will update and report back.

I have to say, this issue is pretty low on my priority list (I don't really care if American AIrlines' website works) so I may take time to reply, and wouldn't care at all if no resources are spent on this.

For now, here's the troubleshooting info from this machine:

I'm fully aware of the difference between an app crash, and an app hang. The app is crashing.

I'm on a third machine here (Dell laptop) and can confirm the failure on this machine as well.
So try to be consistent ;)

Can you post an AppCrashView output from the second or third machines for comparison with the original, please?

I'm on a 4th machine which experiences the problem as well. Sorry, I move around a lot.
Here is the AppCrashView report from machine #4. I will try to get #2 and #3 in a bit. I can always get you a #5 as well. =D

Since it looks like it might be video card driver related as well, I'm going to update those. I'm going from AMD Catalyst Driver version 14.501.1003 to version 18.5.1. I will report back.

I'm back from updating the video card driver on machine #4 and the problem persists (did everyone catch that Pale Moon Safe Mode actually works, and doesn't crash?).

Here is the new AppCrashView report for machine #4:

The video driver in use is actually an Intel HD graphics driver, not the catalyst driver -- 64-bit Intel graphics drivers are known buggy if you use older drivers and considering this:
Driver Date: 1-30-2013
I'd say you have an outdated driver.

Please update your Intel drivers.

That Intel driver is from machine #3, which has Intel Graphics (not AMD), and which I have not updated yet.
Let me see about updating it, and also see about getting the troubleshooting information from machine #4 which is the one with up-to-date AMD graphics drivers.

It would REALLY be helpful if I could edit posts that are more than a day old, or whatever that edit limit is, to keep things organized here. =(

Unfortunately giving people that freedom means they will be destructive as we've seen in the past, erasing past post content and breaking dialog flow in threads making it useless for others to get information from (which is as much the reason why the forum is public as anything).

It would also REALLY be helpful if we could focus one one thing at a time here. Trying to troubleshoot 4 different machines at once is... well it gets overly complicated quick, and confusing -- we can only draw on the information provided, especially if, as in this case, we can't reproduce it.

So, let's do it one at a time, shall we? Start with machine #3 since that's the only one you've supplied troubleshooting information for, so far. Update the Intel driver and let us know the results.

Shouldn't it mean that the problem is with one of your extensions?

Safe Mode does more than just disable extensions; it also disabled video hardware acceleration and a few other things, but it does mark them as a probable cause.

There's a reason why we got rid of the (misleading) menu entry "Restart with Add-ons disabled" and changed it to "Restart in Safe Mode" to more accurately reflect what it does. ;)
