Multiple crashes after update

Post by VPupkin » 2018-08-19, 21:50

Hello!
Your praise of your latest update is absolutely undeserved. This update is shit. Before installing it I used to experience browser crashes time to time and the details showed that they happened in graphics drivers. But AFTER this update the crashes started happening like once every ten minutes! Reasonably, I updated first the built-in graphics driver to latest version (crashes rate reduced, but they continued to happen) and then the discrete GPU driver to latest version. I also cleaned the cache just in case. The crashes are still going on several times a day, much more than before this crappy update. Here are the details copied from the crash window. It's in russian, but it's a standard Windows form of crash messages, so you'll understand.

The second crash belongs to the video driver.
The crashes happened several times when I was watching videos online on sites like IMDB and Dailymotion, but also did they happen at random moments, even when I was doing absolutely nothing.
My system is:
- Windows 7 Pro SP1
- apparently Pale Moon 28 64bit
- Intel Core i3-2350M, Intel HD Graphics 3000 (latest driver), GeForce GT 630M (latest driver), 4GB RAM
As for the Bugzilla results, go find them yourselves. My job as a user is to provide the info about the bug to you, developers, who must fix it. And crawling some fancy bug bases in search of its description with picking keywords and staff is your task and don't you shift it on me.

Update: there is also another kind of bug. Context menu items are turning black i.e. the whole field, background and text.

Please also post the contents of Help->Troubleshooting Information, as well as the crash details from AppCrashView, per this post:

And you expect to get help with that attitude? Version 28 works just fine on my rig. Good luck.

0xc0000374 in stackhash = heap corruption in a non-Pale Moon module, ergo, not a bug in our code.
You likely have system software installed that hooks into the Pale Moon binary in an unsupported way (e.g. antivirus, EMET).

And that error code you pointed to is only one of the messages, which is rare - the main problem is the second one with driver dll. I stress that this error is related to driver dll.
Don't have an antivirus, don't know what EMET is and how would any program hook into the browser binary and what for? That sounds like absolute nonsense to me, explain it.

AppCrashView is from Nir Sofer (NirSoft), who makes a lot of free, useful, high quality, and lightweight utilities for Windows. He has been around for years and is well-respected in the Windows community. NirSoft software is perfectly safe for use.

Security software can do some very strange and weird things in the name of security, almost to the point of acting like malware. If you have any security software at all on your computer, try disabling it temporarily to see if that helps with crashing.

I have nothing of this kind.

What is "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\avest\AVESTC~1\AvSSPc.dll" and why is it loading with your browser?

ASUS Data Security Manager ?

ASUS has nothing to do with it.
This file belongs to a cryptographic software intended for signing electronic tax declarations. And I have no idea why it would load with the browser, because that program has its own interface. Its full name is AvCryptMailCOMSystem.
Do you suggest detaching it from the browser? How do I do this?

Are you able to disable it, stop it from loading?

If so, do so.

Then load PM & verify that it no longer shows up in its' address space.
And assuming not, browse, & see if your crashes persist.

If they do not... not sure what to say after that... ?
Peruse their website, help, & see why it may be interacting with your browser (PM) & if there is a way to prevent that?
Maybe even check to see if you fire up a different browser (say Firefox), whether it shows itself there too?

If crashes continue, once it no longer shows up, then that is likely not the culprit.

It's quite old and probably uses Appinit to load (into a lot more than just the browsers at a guess), try tracking it down with Autoruns and unchecking the entry.

Do you have any other security software, maybe EMET for example, installed?

I've looked up this AppInit in Microsoft docs, found the corresponding registry keys and here it is! Just like you said, the list of AppInit DLLs contains this AvSSPc.dll. I've just deleted it from there, now I'd like to see whether it actually stopped loading with the browser. Is there a way of checking it without waiting for a crash?
As for other security software, I've already written that I don't have any including this EMET, whatever it is.
By the way, that list also contains an item called nvinitx.dll. Do you know what it is?

nvinitx.dll looks like an NVidia DLL of some kind.

EMET is a freeware security suite from Microsoft.

(Possible you may have to reboot your computer after you removed then entry?)

Process Hacker

(I believe...)

double-click on palemoon.exe (brings up its' Properties)
click on the Modules tab
see if AvSSPc.dll shows up in that list

As stated, nvinitx.dll is probably from your Nvidia installation, I don't have it as I choose not to install anything other than the base driver package, there are some tools and methods outlined on the Ghacks site that will help you avoid any crud/spyware from Nvidia (my own older method needs a complete rewrite, easier to use GHacks).

Process Explorer will allow you to check all .dlls etc. loaded within Pale Moon or any other .exe: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysint ... s-explorer Example:

(Oh, there it is. View | Show Lower Pane. Was going to mention Process Explorer too, but on a quick look didn't see where it was hiding.)

Checked it out with Process hacker, this dll is no more. Damn, what could this parasite do while being loaded with the browser? Could it be spying in some way? What does this hooking allow to do in general? And how can a software get hooked to another software except AppInit (and without me knowing about it)?

Disabling the DLL didn't remove all the bugs. The browser still stutters sometimes and fails to show the menus properly (see screenshot 1). I also disabled that nvinitx just in case, but it didn't help.
I suspect that this might be caused by the SuperStart extension. First, when I open a new tab (where SuperStart shows its contents) for more than the first time after the browser startup, browser begins to stutter for several seconds, which is accompanied by the SuperStart thumbnails not fully loaded (screenshot 2). After these stutters I also begin to see those black menus.
What do you say? This extension belongs to your extensions page, so maybe you need to recheck it now. Or there is a different reason behind it?

I'll note that most likely your video drivers are dated.

On my end (Intel HD4000) I just updated from (ancient) 9.17.10.2857 to 10.18.10.4885's.
(In SeaMonkey 2.49, akin to FF 2.52, there was no issue.
But on messing with SeaMonkey 2.53, akin to FF 2.56, I was getting graphics related crashes.
Updating the driver seems to have helped in that respect.
Not crashing & video playback is improved.)

Check to see if Hardware Acceleration is enabled on your end.
Disabling it may help avert (video related) crashes (& likewise may help with your menus).
But if updating your video drivers & also enabling HA works, then that is better.

(A dated instance where McAfee Site Advisor (& other softwares) were injecting themselves into SeaMonkey/Thunderbird, negatively affecting them, Bug 525601 widget is not always able to initialise OLE (somehow triggered by various third party software e.g. McAfee Site Advisor, TortoiseHg).)
