I'm using Windows 10 and I'm not seeing this issue at all. I always have the X's on the tabs.

Hi, everyone. First off, I was not "yelling" or anything like that. I simply enlarged the text and made it into boldface to ensure that people saw that I was responding directly to them and/or was trying to catch the attention of Moonchild (and/or other members of the Pale Moon team). That's all. Second, I have downloaded the latest "official" build of Pale Moon (28.0.0.1) and installed it. The same problem still is happening. I am going to include the requested information in order for me to get further support (and to assist the Pale Moon team in narrowing this problem down). See below ...

************

Operating system: Windows 10 (version 1803); 64-bit
Browser version: 28.0.0.1
32-bit or 64-bit?: 64-bit
Problem URL: N/A
Theme: Default as included from the outset following installation
Installed extensions: Adblock Latitude (from the Pale Moon website)
Installed plugins: Silverlight and VLC

************

I sincerely hope this is of help. Thanks in advance to those who respond. I will also try to follow through on the suggestions made by others earlier. (Not sure when I can do that.) Again, thanks.

I'm afraid it doesn't help. That information doesn't indicate any immediate probable cause.

OK, so now what? I guess I’ll go ahead and do a “clean” install of Pale Moon later. But I can tell you that this behavior definitely did not come up in version 27. So, something had to change internally going from 27 to 28. Any other suggestions you may have would be appreciated. Thanks.

Some people's definition of a clean install is sometimes different from someone else's.

Did your clean install include a new profile "without" any addons or customizations in it in version (28.0.1)?

Point taken. I have since gone back and done a completely "clean" uninstall/reinstall of Pale Moon. This time, I did not make any customizations (e.g., no individual preferences, no add-ons). I also followed Moonchild's instructions as to how to do a "clean" uninstall of Pale Moon (e.g., deleting the "Moonchild Productions" folder, et cetera). The same problem re-emerged after starting up Pale Moon maybe 5 - 6 times. See attached picture. So, what now? I find it hard to believe no one else apparently has this issue. If someone else has this issue, please report it so Moonchild et al. can look into it further. Again, this behavior was not present in version 27 at all, but started cropping up after version 28. That leads me to believe that this is something that is a problem inherent in the code. There's no other explanation. Thanks.

P.S.: Just to be clear - I have not updated my video drivers, etc., etc., etc. Everything is the same as when it was while I had version 27. (Thanks again.)

Update:

Downloaded version 27.9.4 from the FTP archive. Default installation. "Clean," too. Did uninstall Pale Moon 28, too.

Absolutely no problems with the "X" on the tabs. They showed up each and every time. I started/closed Pale Moon maybe 25 - 30 times in rapid succession.

Again, no problems. So, there has got to be something wrong with version 28 there. Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks to all.

You keep saying there is something inherent in the code of 28, a bug because you don't have the X's in the tabs while everyone else has them. No one has been able to reproduce the problem you're having. So if anyone associated with the development of Pale Moon can't reproduce the problem you're having and no other general users are having this same problem, then there is one other plausible explanation.

This plausible explanation, as of right now in this moment of time, is the problem lies on your end someplace, somehow and this explanation is something you refuse to believe.

I run 32 bit windows Pale Moon 28.0.1 in 64 bit Windows 7 and 64 bit linux Pale Moon 28.0.1 in 64 bit linux Mint 19 (Tara) Xfce and I have the "X" in all of my tabs in "four different computers" running both operating systems. This covers nine hard drives because my four computers have multiple hard drives for each one of them. And they are all different models of computers.

Me confoosed then. In vanilla PM I see no option to middle clk to close, nor close button only on active tab. I only think of them as extension prefs, though I know you can get that close button behaviour with userChrome.css...

EDIT: ah... tab close button behaviour is in PMC.

There's a direct pref for showing (or not) tab close buttons: browser.tabs.closeButtons (values here).
OP's tabs behave as if that pref were set to 0 (but that would have/didn't appear in his Troubleshooting Info).

Mine is default '1', "on all tabs until tabClipWidth is reached, then active tab only"; I have 38 pinned tabs, currently only a little over 100 'normal' tabs, mostly inactive, so probably expected/correct behaviour?
