Unable to download files with Pale Moon 26.5.0 (x64) on Ubuntu

Until today this version of Pale Moon has worked just fine, but suddenly I have become unable to download a number of seemingly arbitrary files with this browser. I get the download prompt, but when I click OK, it simply goes away and the download does not start. The effect seems to be arbitrary, varying site by site. On some I am able to make downloads as normal, but on others this problem persists -- for example, I am not able to download anything at
Wordpress.org. I have tried turning off my add-ons in case they are the cause, but to no avail. I am able to make normal downloads on other browsers, so the bug is specific to Pale Moon. Any idea what could be the cause of this problem?

Nope, not a Pale Moon bug; I am able to download a file from the site just fine.

Clearly it's not a bug that affects everyone with the browser; I had no problem with it until today. But something has changed, perhaps just a standard security update in the operating system or something, or something getting corrupted in my user data, that has resulted in this bug. I have determined that it's not an add-on related issue, in any case, and that it repeats itself even after restarting the system.

The bug continues to persist, for example at GitHub. Before I run a complete reinstall, is there any way that I can diagnose this issue so that I could send in more data of what happens when I try to make a download? I would want to make as comprehensive bug report as possible so that this could be fixed completely for the future versions.

You can test with a new clean profile first.

There is probably something wrong with your configuration since I can download files fine from Github.
